Se bem que esta evolução possa ser traçada desde o século XIX, a Era Democrática, que importa estudar, foi sem dúvida marcada por mudanças profundas a todos os níveis. Porém, esta é uma época particularmente rica, relativamente à criação de entidades encarregadas da salvaguarda do património cultural, para não falar apenas do caso específico do Algarve, onde este período é marcado por um vasto desenvolvimento quanto à vertente do património regional, num processo cada vez mais simbiótico entre gestão nacional, regional e municipal. Este trabalho está dividido em três capítulos. O primeiro faz o enquadramento histórico da questão abordando inicialmente como o património cultural foi cimentado no contexto europeu, graças à sua importância crescente nas políticas públicas de cada nação e às entidades reguladoras criadas para este fim. A seguir apresenta-se o processo nacional até ao terceiro quartel do século XX, sobretudo as iniciativas tomadas pelo Estado portu guês no tocante à defesa do seu património nomeadamente, a criação legislativa e a gé nese de algumas entidades que visaram gerir a herança histórica do país. No segundo capítulo o foco é dado à apelidada era democrática, vivida em contexto nacional desde 25 de Abril de 1974, quando se assiste à criação de diversas entidades de proteção patrimo nial, motivadas por sucessivas reformas a nível governamental do país. O terceiro capítulo ocupa-se do caso específico do Algarve, analisando as políticas de defesa do património cultural na região.This dissertation intends to synthesize the evolutionary process of heritage defense policies in Portugal. Although this evolution can be traced back to the 19th century, the Democratic Era was undoubtedly marked by profound changes at all levels, which is im portant to study. However, this is a particularly rich time in terms of the creation of enti ties in charge of safeguarding the cultural heritage. Not to mention the specific case of the Algarve, where this period is marked by a vast development in terms of regional her itage, in an increasingly symbiotic process between national, regional, and municipal management. This work is divided into three chapters. The first provides a historical framework for the issue, initially addressing how cultural heritage was cemented in the European context, thanks to its growing importance in the public policies of each nation and the regulatory bodies created for this purpose. The national process up to the third quarter of the 20th century is presented below, especially the initiatives taken by the Portuguese State concerning the defense of its heritage, namely, the creation of legislation and the genesis of some entities that aimed to manage the country's historical heritage. In the second chapter, the focus is given to the so-called democratic era, lived in the national context since April 25, 1974, when we witness the creation of various entities for the protection of assets, motivated by successive reforms at the country's governmental level.
