Abstract(s)

The traditional techniques of outer coating containing lime—Finishing thin layer (bar- ramento), simulation coating (‘fingidos’), sgraffito and graffiti, mass work, whitewash and paintings— earned their heritage value, as part of the urban image interpretation, of the authenticity of a set of buildings and as testimony of the constructive knowledge (Aguiar 2002). This article attempts to frame the traditional architectural coatings in their historical and architectural context of the Algarve, address- ing their specific technologies and building processes, based on a collection of testimonies of master builders and inhabitants. This article will contribute to an overview of traditional coatings in the vernacu- lar architecture of the Algarve, while considering them as good practices for the safeguard of architec- tural heritage.
