Foot, James Anthony Malcolm; Figueiredo, JoséOver the past decade, wireless internet traffic has seen explosive growth fuelled by the popularity of smartphones, the wide adoption of IoT (Internet of Things) and the demand for access to rich media files (HD, UHD and VR) on the go. All of this causing huge constraint on the current network, specially the wireless networks. One of the many possible solutions is to increase the bandwidth, but currently the microwave spectrum is very congested so the alternative is to explore the Terahertz band. One of the viable options could be the resonant tunnelling diode (RTD). It’s been proven to oscillate in the terahertz band, it’s a small package and operates at room temperature. The only downside is the low output power. This dissertation analyses the structural and electrical capabilities of the RTD through the use of models and simulations tools, such as WinGreen, MATLAB and SPICE.
