- Exploring offshore sediment evidence of the 1755 CE Tsunami (Faro, Portugal): implications for the study of outer shelf Tsunami depositsPublication . Kümmerer, Vincent; Drago, Teresa; C. However, compared to onshore deposits, offshore deposits are more difficult to access, and so far, studies of outer shelf tsunami deposits are scarce. Here, an example of studying these deposits is presented to infer implications for tsunami-related signatures in similar environments and potentially contribute to pre-historic tsunami event detections. A multidisciplinary approach was performed to detect the sedimentary imprints left by the 1755 CE tsunami in two cores, located in the southern Portuguese continental shelf at water depths of 58 and 91 m. Age models based on 14C and 210Pbxs allowed a probable correspondence with the 1755 CE tsunami event. A multi-proxy approach, including sand composition, grain-size, inorganic geochemistry, magnetic susceptibility, and microtextural features on quartz grain surfaces, yielded evidence for a tsunami depositional signature, although only a subtle terrestrial signal is present. A low contribution of terrestrial material to outer shelf tsunami deposits calls for methodologies that reveal sedimentary structures linked to tsunami event hydrodynamics. Finally, a change in general sedimentation after the tsunami event might have influenced the signature of the 1755 CE tsunami in the outer shelf environment.
- First assessment of blue carbon stocks, sequestration rates and potential sources since 1900 at Arguin Island (Mauritania)Publication . This study reports the first in situ records of organic carbon (OC) stocks and burial rates for seagrass beds at Arguin Island, Banc d'Arguin (Mauritania), Western Africa, measured in intertidal Zostera noltei and subtidal Cymodocea nodosa meadows. The major blue carbon sources in seagrass meadows since 1900 were assessed using sedimentary environmental DNA (eDNA) and chronostratigraphy. The OC stocks in the top 50 cm of the sediment cores were not significantly different between the beds of the two seagrass species and averaged 27.8±7.14 Mg C ha−1, which is 5 times higher than that in adjacent unvegetated sediments. The OC sequestration rate for the past 100 years was 10.3±1.4 g C m−2 year−1 in C. nodosa sediments and 12.3±5.9 g C m−2 year−1 in Z. noltei sediments. Sedimentary eDNA analysis revealed that the major OC source within the C. nodosa and Z. noltei sediments has been the seagrass species itself, with low contributions from allochthonous eDNA reads. Carbon sources in Z. noltei meadows were more diverse than those in C. nodosa meadows. In bare sediment, diatoms were the major carbon source. The present study demonstrates the potential of sedimentary eDNA to reveal the major sources of organic matter in blue carbon ecosystems, improving our understanding of the provenance of sedimentary OC and thus carbon cycling processes. Additionally, it provides new OC stock and sequestration rate measurements from a region of the world that remains underrepresented in global blue carbon assessments.
- Multiproxy characterization of high energy layers in the nner continental shelf of Quarteira (Southern Portugal) - Preliminary resultsPublication . Their presence has been usually related either to tsunami waves or storm waves. In both cases, the identification of the transport mechanism requires a variety of proxies. This work presents the preliminary results of the analysis of a gravity core (MW-107) collected at ca. 57 m water depth in the inner continental shelf of Quarteira (Algarve) and aims to identify potential high energy events.

Lopes, Cristina; Costa, Pedro; Baptista, Maria AnaThe importance of tsunami hazard assessment is only possible if a complete dataset of events is available, allowing the determination of the recurrence intervals of the tsunamis adapted to local and regional conditions. One possible way to know these intervals is to study the offshore sedimentary record, looking for sediment remobilised and transported by the incoming tsunami waves and generated backwash currents. Even if these deposits are not of easy access (and not so well studied), the tsunami depositional signature has potential to be better preserved than those located onshore.
- Tropical ecosystem shifts at the Eocene–Oligocene transition in the southwestern Caribbean regionPublication . This global cooling event, characterized by the first major Antarctic glaciation and a similar to 50 m sea-level fall, triggered selective extinctions in marine ecosystems and restructured sedimentary processes, making it one of the most significant climatic events of the Cenozoic. While the global impacts of the EOT are well documented, its effects on the marine environment of NW South America remain poorly understood. This region's unique position as a connection between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans before the closure of the Central American Seaway provides a valuable window into tropical ecosystem responses during this period. This study integrates micropaleontological and geochemical data from the ANH-SJ-1 drill core in the Colombian Caribbean to evaluate the impacts of global climatic shifts on tropical marine ecosystems. Palynological indicators, including the terrestrial/marine (T/M) index, along with XRF-derived elemental ratios (Zr/Rb, Ti/Al, K/Al, and K/Rb), reflect enhanced continental input during the EOT. These patterns suggest intensified erosion and detrital transport to bathyal depths, likely driven by rapid sea-level fall and hypopycnal flows. Calcareous nannofossil trophic indices reveal elevated surface productivity, likely fueled by increased continental nutrient influx, supported by higher Ba/Ti ratios that indicate enhanced organic matter export to the seafloor. The resulting oxygen depletion favored infaunal over epifaunal benthic foraminifera, marking a shift in community structure. Improved carbonate preservation across the transition, evidenced by a shift from agglutinated to calcareous benthic foraminifera and higher Ca/Ti ratios, reflects a deepening of the carbonate compensation depth (CCD), likely due to enhanced alkalinity from continental weathering. A positive delta 13Corg excursion (similar to 0.84 parts per thousand) aligns with global records and supports contributions from organic carbon oxidation, volcanic inputs, and weathering. Although limited by the number of available samples and low fossil abundances in some intervals, our multiproxy approach enables a coherent reconstruction of environmental dynamics. The ANH-SJ-1 record highlights the sensitivity of tropical systems to global climatic shifts and reinforces the importance of tropical data for understanding Cenozoic climate evolution and anticipating future ecosystem responses.
