- Are sardine larvae caught off northern Portugal in winter starving? An approach examining nutritional conditionsPublication . Chicharo, Maria Alexandra; Esteves, E.; Santos, A. Miguel P.; Santos, Antonina dos; Peliz, A.; Re, P.Recently, winter upwelling events off western Iberia have become more frequent. This may affect the production and survival of sardines egss and larvae through increased offshore transport. By analysis of RNA: DNA ratios, we investigated the impact of winter upwelling events on the larval conditions of Sardina pilchardus larvaeas a function of oceanographic conditions and food availability. Larvae were collected on a research cruise off northern Portugal in February 2000. Environmental parameters such as wind, water temperature, salinity microzooplankton biomass and daily egg production of the calanoid copepod Calanus helgolandicus also measured. The mean RNA:DNA ratios wererelatively high, indicating that almost all larvae collected were good condition. This was in agreement with the high microzooplankton biomass and high daily egg production of the copepod C. helgolandicus recorded during the same period. No adverse effects of upwelling causing offshore transport of larvae into poor feeding areas could be demonstrated because of the presence of a stratified warm plume with consequent high food production.
- Assessing the impact of environmental forcing on the condition of anchovy larvae in the Cadiz Gulf using nucleic acid and fatty acid-derived indicesPublication . Using anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus) of the Cadiz Gulf as a study case and considering the "Ocean Triad" hypothesis, we investigate the larval ecophysiological status and potential survival in relation to oceanographic variables. Therefore, this study aims to describe the nutritional condition of anchovy larvae during spawning season (peak in summer) through nucleic acid- and fatty acid (FA)-derived indices and to analyze the effects of the major environmental parameters (Depth, Temperature, Salinity, Plankton biomass) on anchovy survival potential at early phases. Fish larvae were collected in August from 30 m to 400 m depth at 35 stations off the southern Iberian coast. A previous upwelling event influenced the oceanographic conditions of the more western stations off Cape Sao Vicente (CSV). Along the coast, the water became warmer from west to the east through Cape Santa Maria (CSM) ending at Guadiana estuary, where easterly winds originated the development of a counter current. The standardized RNA/ DNA (sRD) of anchovy larvae decreased throughout larval ontogeny, reflecting a reduction of growth during the development. Essential FA concentrations also decreased, but docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in particular was highly conserved even after the reduction of total FA concentration in anchovy larvae related to the onset of swimming abilities (post-flexion phase). The oceanographic conditions (west upwelling, east counter current, and stratification) led to a nearshore aggregation of plankton and anchovy larvae with good ecophysiological conditions in the central area of the southern coast, where an optimal range of temperature and chlorophyll, as an indirect food proxy for anchovy larval development, were registered. The study proves that the oceanographic conditions of the study area are putative drivers of the ecophysiological condition of anchovy larvae to guarantee potential survival, supporting the "Ocean Triad" hypothesis with major repercussions for recruitment and population dynamics.

A.; Saiz, E.; Re, P.Mortality during the early stages is a major cause of the natural variations in the size and recruitment strength of marine fish populations. In this study, the relation between the size-at-hatch and early survival was assessed using laboratory experiments and on field-caught larvae of the European sardine (Sardina pilchardus). Larval size-at-hatch was not related to the egg size but was significantly, positively related to the diameter of the otolith-at-hatch. Otolith diameter-athatch was also significantly correlated with survival-at-age in fed and unfed larvae in the laboratory. For sardine larvae collected in the Bay of Biscay during the spring of 2008, otolith radius-at-hatch was also significantly related to viability. Larval mortality has frequently been related to adverse environmental conditions and intrinsic factors affecting feeding ability and vulnerability to predators. Our study offers evidence indicating that a significant portion of fish mortality occurs during the endogenous (yolk) and mixed (yolk /prey) feeding period in the absence of predators, revealing that marine fish with high fecundity, such as small pelagics, can spawn a relatively large amount of eggs resulting in small larvae with no chances to survive. Our findings help to better understand the mass mortalities occurring at early stages of marine fish.
- Does the nutritional condition limit survival potential of sardine Sardina pilchardus (Walbaum, 1792) larvae off the north coast of Spain? RNA/DNA ratios and their variabilityPublication . Chicharo, Maria Alexandra; Chícharo, Luís; Valdes, L.; Lopez-Jamar, E.; Re, P.The aim of this study was to determine the nutritional condition of Sardina pilchardus larvae and the percentage of larvae that were starving at the time of capture. The survey was conducted, during the spawning season, in April and May of 1991 and 1992, off the northern coast of Spain. An accepted ¯uorimetric technique was used to determine the concentrations of both RNA and DNA and to calculate RNA/DNA ratio for each larva. RNA/DNA ratios were related to the zooplankton biomass (>53 mm). Low percentages of starving larvae (RNA/DNA ratio less than 1.3) were registered, ranging from 0% to 2.5%. Results based on the mean and variance of individual larval growth rates showed that predation pressure was not increasing from 1991 to 1992. Based on the presence of sardine larvae in good condition together with low predation, a high recruitment was expected. However, the 1993 recruitment, from 1992 spring spawning, was very poor. This was associated mainly with unfavourable advection from the nursery area. Moreover, even low levels of starvation, such as registered, operating over long time periods could have considerable consequences for larval mortality.
- Effect of temperature on the growth, survival, development and foraging behaviour of Sardina pilchardus larvaePublication . A.; Re, P.; Santos, A.M.P.The effect of water temperature on the growth, survival, development and foraging behaviour of European sardine Sardina pilchardus larvae was examined in the laboratory. First, the capability of early sardine larvae to cope with starvation was assessed at temperatures from 10 to 22 degrees C. Second, we examined under ad libitum feeding conditions and across the range of temperatures experienced by sardines during spawning along the Atlanto-Iberian coast (13-17 degrees C) the ontogenetic changes in growth, survival and foraging behaviour of sardine larvae. Unfed larvae had similar maximum survival times (11-12 d post hatching, dph) from 13 to 15 degrees C, but the survival time was significantly shorter at the coldest and warmest temperatures tested. The survival of exogenously feeding larvae increased with temperature, but younger endogenously feeding larvae had higher survival at colder temperatures. The cumulative mortality after 25 dph, however, was similar at the 3 temperatures. Not only larval growth rate increased with increasing temperature, but ontogenetic development also occurred sooner and at smaller sizes. Notochord flexion, which is a developmental milestone for fish, occurred 10 d earlier at 17 rather than at 13 degrees C. The time spent swimming and the foraging behaviour (orientations to prey, feeding strikes and successful capture) significantly increased throughout the ontogeny and with temperature. This study highlights how even modest changes in spawning temperature can lead to large changes in the survival and growth of larval sardine. This study also reveals some of the mechanisms whereby inter-annual and seasonal variability in temperature can have significant ecological impacts at the population level.
- Estimation of starvation and diet variation of the RNA/DNA ratios in field-caught Sardina pilchardus larvae off the north of SpainPublication . Chicharo, Alexandra; Chícharo, Luís; Valdes, L.; Lopez-Jamar, E.; Re, P.The aim of this study was to analyse the general larval condition, to determine the lncidence of starvation and to investigate the effect of time of day on RNA/DNA ratios among field-caught Sardina pilchardus (L.) larvae. The larvae were collected during 4 research cruises off northern Spain, during March, April, May and June 1992. A highly sensitive fluorometric method for nucleic acid quantification was applied to larvae of S. pilchardus. The means of the RNA/DNA ratio were relat~vely high, so the larvae collected off northern Spain were generally in good condition. Low percentages of starving larvae (RNA/DNA ratio less than 1.3), ranging from 0 to 3.23%, were found over the 4 mo. The RNA/DNA ratios were significantly correlated with zooplankton biomass. Larvae collected at night revealed higher RNA/DNA ratios compared to larvae caught during the day. This seems to indicate that there is some endogenous rhythm in the production of RNA. It would then follow that, if there are die1 changes in RNA concentrations, average RNA Indices can be unrepresentative if there IS any day/night bias in sampling.
- Horizontal spatial and temporal distribution patterns of nearshore larval fish assemblages at a temperate rocky shorePublication . Borges, R.; Ben-Hamadou, Radhouan; Chicharo, Maria Alexandra Teodosio; Re, P.; Gonçalves, Emanuel J.There have been no previous studies of the composition of nearshore larval fish assemblages along the coast of Portugal. We aimed to describe the composition and horizontal distribution patterns of larval fish assemblages and their temporal dynamics near a rocky reef at depths shallower than 13 m (inshore) and at two miles (3.70 km) from shore (offshore), as well as along transects perpendicular to the shoreline, from the reef to 10 miles offshore (18.52 km). Samples were taken using 5 min sub-surface trawls at the rocky shore of the Arra´bida Marine Park (W Portugal). A total of 1021 larvae were collected, belonging to 61 taxa inshore and to 29 taxa offshore. Along transects, 626 larvae of 52 taxa were collected. Most larvae belonged to coastal species associated with rocky reefs. Total larval abundance and diversity were higher from May to July, which is consistent with the spawning activity of adults. Diversity and total larval abundance decreased significantly with increasing distance from shore, both in the inshore/offshore comparison and in the transects, where this decrease was evident at a very small spatial scale (within the first mile from the reef). Species assemblages differed in the pattern of distribution, with most species clearly associated to the extreme nearshore. The distribution patterns obtained were independent of the spawning mode of species. Results are discussed in the light of the possible physical mechanisms that can potentially act at the Arra´bida Marine Park to facilitate larvae retention and the role of larval behaviour.
- Larval and juvenile development of dusky grouper Epinephelus marginatus reared in mesocosmsPublication . Cunha, M. E.; Re, P.; Quental-Ferreira, H.; Gavaia, Paulo J.; Pousão-Ferreira, P.The larval development of the dusky grouper Epinephelus marginatus up to the benthic juvenile stage is described in detail to establish a reference for their larval identification. Development is described in terms of ontogenetic changes in morphology, growth, pigmentation, fin structure and skeletal structure. Larvae were reared in mesocosms at a mean temperature of 24·3◦ C, salinity of 36·5, dissolved oxygen of 6·4mg l−1 and pH of 8·2. Newly hatched larvae had an estimated total length (LT) of 2·3 mm. On the second day post hatching the yolk was almost fully absorbed with traces of the oil globule still present, the eyes were already pigmented and mouth and gut functional. At this stage the cranial skeletal elements for feeding and breathing (mouth and gills) and the pectoral-fin support were already present. About 50% of the observed larvae had food in their guts. Pigmentation was very characteristic, consisting of two large chromatophores visible on the edge of the primordial fin, close to the midpoint of the post-anal region of the body and over the midgut and hindgut and post-anal portion of the body. At 2·9mm LT the emergence of the second dorsal-fin spine, characteristic of the Epinephilinae, was clearly visible. The pre-flexion stage started in larva of 3·2mm LT. At 5·5mm LT the larvae possessed posterior preopercular angle spines, and the dorsal and pelvic spines presented serrated edges and were pigmented. The water surface-tension-related death of the yolk sac and pre-flexion larvae described in the rearing of several other grouper species did not occur during E. marginatus culture. Notochord flexion, with initial ossification of the caudal-fin supporting elements, started at 6·6mm LT. At this stage the major melanophores, preopercular, dorsal and pelvic spines and mandibular teeth were already present. Transformation of larvae into juveniles occurred when larvae averaged 13·8mm LT. Juveniles with a mean LT of 20·1mm started to settle and most of them were benthic with a mean LT of 26·8 mm.
- Physical-biological interactions in the life history of small pelagic fish in the Western Iberia Upwelling EcosystemPublication . Santos, A. B.; Peliz, A.; Re, P.This paper reviews relevant investigations conducted in the Western Iberia Upwelling Ecosystem (WIUE) on the dynamics of small pelagic fish (SPF), its relationship to climate changes and processes related to the ‘ocean triad’ (enrichment, concentration, transport/retention). In the last decades, a decline in the productivity of several SPF species (e.g., sardine and horse mackerel) was observed in the WIUE, which is partially explained by environmental variability (e.g., changes in coastal upwelling). The main mechanism proposed to explain this decline is the increased frequency and intensity of upwelling events during the spawning season (winter) of these species, which is typically a period when convergence conditions prevail. Thus, this ‘anomalous’ situation promotes egg and larval dispersal away from the favourable coastal habitat (the shelf) and consequently has a negative impact on their survival and recruitment. However, the variability of local features like the Western Iberia Buoyant Plume (WIBP) and the Iberian Poleward Current (IPC) introduce important fluctuations in the transport patterns of the region, and could modulate the impact of these winter upwelling events in the survival of larvae. The retention on the shelf of larval sardine along convergence zones formed by the interaction of these two features plays an important role in their survival. Furthermore, the WIBP is a suitable environment for the growth of phytoplankton and for larval fish survival. From these findings it is clear that simplified Ekman transport models could not explain larval fish transport/retention patterns in this region and more realistic biophysical models should be used to simulate the local oceanographic conditions to understand larval dynamics and the success of recruitment of SPF in the Western Iberia.
