- Claude Crébillon: a sedução do romancePublication .
- Variation within North African natrix maura (Serpentes: Colubridae) inferred from mtDNA sequences: comparative phylogeography of Magrehbian reptilesPublication . Barata, M.; Harris, D. J.; Castilho, RitaWhile the comparative phylogeography of European fauna is relatively well understood, with Pleistocene climatic oscillations leading to ‘southern refugia’ for many species, the equivalent pattern has not been determined for North Africa. In this context variation within North African populations of the riverine snake Natrix maura were assessed using mitochondrial DNA sequences. Recent literature regarding North African phylogeographic studies of reptiles was compiled, and several surprising patterns emerged. The most interesting was the extensive movement of species across the Strait of Gibraltar during the Pleistocene. Another is the general pattern of deep genetic divergences between Tunisian and Moroccan populations, often at a level implying the existence of cryptic species. Natrix maura has three distinct lineages in North Africa, however, it apparently did not cross the Strait of Gibraltar during the Pleistocene, but probably did so during the Messinian salinity crisis.
- O Jogo no jogo. Divertimento, experimentalismo, problematização do literárioPublication . A temática proposta, O Jogo no Jogo.
- Assessing swordfish distribution in the South Atlantic from spatial predictionsPublication . Hazin, Humberto; Erzini, KarimGeneralized Regression Analysis and Spatial Prediction (GRASP) was used to map the spatial distribution of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the South Atlantic. Generalized additive models (GAMs) were used to relate catch to environmental predictor variables. Catch information from 38,000 Brazilian pelagic longline sets from 1980 to 2000 and size frequency data from 5000 longline sets from 1982 to 2000 were obtained from International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT). Results highlight the importance of environmental variables for the fishery and for the spatial distribution of different size classes of swordfish (small, intermediate and large). The distribution of swordfish was closely associated with convergence zones (inter-tropical and sub-tropical), especially in the months of greatest convergence intensity. Spatial distribution patterns differed for the three studied size classes. The smallest size classes were found mainly in coastal zones and in areas with a shallow mixed layer (<20 m). In contrast intermediate-sized swordfish were mostly associated with the inter-tropical convergence and mixed layers of more than 20 m depth and large swordfish were often found in the vicinity of the sub-tropical convergence zone and in areas with mixed layers of less than 25 m and greater than 60 m. - Multivariate cluster analysis to study motility activation of Solea senegalensis spermatozoa: a model for marine teleostsPublication . Martínez-Pastor, Felipe; Cabrita, Elsa; Soares, Florbela; Anel-Lopez, Luis; Dinis, Maria TeresaComputer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) and clustering analysis have enabled to study sperm subpopulations in mammals, but their use in fish sperm has been limited. We have used spermatozoa. from Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) as a model for subpopulation analysis in teleostei using two different activating solutions. Semen from six males was activated using 1100 mOsm/kg solutions: artificial seawater (ASW) or sucrose solution (SUC). Motility was acquired at 15, 30, 45, and 60 s post-activation. CASA parameters were combined into two principal components, which were used in a non-hierarchical clustering analysis, obtaining four subpopulations (CL): CL1 (slow/non-linear), CL2 (slow/linear), CL3 (fast/non-linear), and CL4 (fast/linear). We detected spermatozoa lysis, especially in ASW. Sperm motility was higher for SUC and decreased with time. The subpopulation proportions varied with time and activating treatment, showing both an increase in CL1 and CL2 and a decrease in CO and CL4 with time. Both CL3 and CL4 were higher in samples activated with SUC, at least in early post-activation. Proportions of CO and CL4 at 15 s were associated with higher quality at 60 sand with lower lysis. A second clustering analysis was conducted, classifying the males accordingly to their motility subpopulations. This analysis showed a high heterogeneity between samples. Subpopulation analysis of CASA data can be applied to Solea spermatozoa, allowing identification of potentially interesting sperm subpopulations. Future studies might benefit from these techniques to establish the relationship of these subpopulations with fish sperm quality and fertility, helping to characterize males according to their reproductive potential.
- Inversion of the Bessel potential operator in weighted variable Lebesgue spacesPublication . Almeida, Alexandre; Rafeiro, HumbertoWe study the inversion problem of the Bessel potential operator within the frameworks of the weighted Lebesgue spaces with variable exponent. The inverse operator is constructed by using pproximative inverse operators. This generalizes some classical results to the variable exponent setting. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
- CYP2C8 polymorphisms among malaria patients in Guinea-BissauPublication . J-Lyn, Yvonne Knoo; Marques, Vera Linda RibeiroCytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C8 is the major enzyme responsible for the metabolism of many clinically important drugs including the antimalarial amodiaquine (AQ). This study investigated in 91 malaria-infected patients from Guinea-Bissau, the prevalence of CYP2C8 variants CYP2C8*2, CYP2C8*3 and CYP2C8*4, which may have important clinical implications for the efficacy and toxicity of amodiaquine. CYP2C8*2 and CYP2C8*3 alleles were found to be present in high frequencies in this population at 24% and 32%, respectively. Most of the subjects analysed were carriers of at least one variant allele. This suggests the possibility of a high occurrence of CYP2C8 poor metabolizer individuals among malaria patients in Guinea-Bissau, who may therefore be at a greater risk of adverse effects compared to other populations previously characterized.
