  • Improving the earthquake resilience of primary schools in the border regions of neighbouring countries

    This work summarises the strategy adopted in the European research project PERSISTAH. It aims to increase the resilience of the population, focusing on the existing primary schools in the Algarve (Portugal) and Huelva (Spain) regions. Software was developed to assess the seismic safety of these schools, considering different earthquake scenarios. Seismic retrofitting measures were studied and numerically tested. Some of them were also implemented in the retrofitting activities of two case study schools (one in each country). It was found that the adopted ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs) considerably affect the results obtained with the software, especially for offshore earthquake scenarios. Furthermore, the results show that the masonry buildings would be the most damaged school typologies for all the scenarios considered. Additionally, a set of guidelines was created to support the school community and the technicians related to the construction industry. The goal of these documents is to increase the seismic resilience of the population. Different activities were carried out to train schoolteachers in seismic safety based on the guidelines produced, obtaining positive feedback from them.

O momento crítico elástico é calculado â parte, manualmente ou pelos softwares LTBeam ou LtBeam-N. É usado nas aulas para confirmar cálculo manual.

  • Feasibility of using steel bracings for seismic retrofitting of RC school buildings

    Since 1983, schools were designed to sustain earthquakes in the region of Algarve (Portugal), according to the Portuguese national seismic code (RSAEEP), which is still mandatory. There is also the possibility of using the national annex of Eurocode 8 (EC8), which is the NP EN 1998-1:2010, to design new buildings. According to the EC8, school buildings are classified in importance class III, relating to the consequences associated with an eventual collapse, namely to a high incidence of persons. Therefore, the EC8 establish a higher return period, and consequently a more demanding seismic action for these buildings, which is not considered in the RSAEEP. This is one of the reasons why school buildings that were built in the last decades probably do not comply to the more recent EC8 seismic security levels. In this context, seismic retrofitting solutions that upgrade the seismic security level should be tested. In this work, the seismic assessment of a reinforced concrete (RC) primary school building is presented, and the effect of the addiction of steel bracings is studied (using a pushover analysis), in the context of the PERSISTAH project, which aims to assess the seismic risk of primary school buildings in Algarve (Portugal) and Huelva (Spain).
  • Sebenta - Método dos Deslocamentos

    Em primeiro lugar aborda o Método dos Deslocamentos de forma Direta, quantificando o grau de indeterminação cinemático e recorrendo aos modos de deformação associados. Posteriormente apresenta a formulação matricial recorrendo às matrizes elementares de cada barra tipo e usando o espalhamento e adição matricial para se obter a equação de matricial de equilíbrio global. Resolvem-se pórticos planos e grelhas (sem inclinação) estruturais.
