- A dyadic approach to adolescents’ risky online behaviorsPublication . Agapito, Dora; Brito, Pedro QuelhasThis research analyzes the discrepancies respecting parents' and their children's perspectives on adolescents' risky online behaviors and parental mediation. Rather than focus solely on youth outcomes, this study explores dyadic data, by comparing reports from adolescents attending 7th to 12th grades in Portuguese schools and those of their parents (N=1016). Moreover, this research considers the existence of defense mechanisms influencing adolescents' reports, a factor that has been neglected in previous studies. Differences regarding adolescents' gender, parents' gender, and adolescents' school year are considered and tested using One-way ANOVA. Within the family unit, the only members considered by adolescents to have the same or more online and computer skills than the teenagers themselves are their older siblings. Practical implications aiming to mitigate the risk involved in adolescents' online experiences, and theoretical contributions to the field of prevention and youth well-being in the context of consumer behavior in the digital age are discussed.
- Positive psychology, well-being, and mindfulness: a successful partnership towards the development of meaningful tourist experiencesPublication . Câmara, Ester; Pocinho, Margarida; Agapito, Dora; Jesus, Saúl Neves deTourism is going through a very challenging phase due to the current pandemic situation. In this context, psychology and tourism are a successful partnership to develop meaningful experiences considering tourists' needs, desires, and expectations. This interconnection is observed through the application of positive psychology in the context of meaningful tourist experiences. This approach comprises adequate indicators to explore the tourism field from the perspective of individuals' well-being. Positive psychology, positive tourism, well-being, and mindfulness constitute the theoretical foundations of this article, which intends to understand how they are intertwined to fulfil one goal: developing meaningful tourist experiences. This article offers a theoretical reflection on the connections between the referred theoretical foundations. In so doing, it proposes a preliminary diagram illustrating the theoretical links observed in literature, which acts as a first step towards the design of a systematic literature review on the antecedents and outcomes of meaningful tourist experiences.
- A review on destination social responsibility: towards a research agendaPublication . Agapito, Dora; Kronenburg, Rosalie; Pinto, PatríciaDestination social responsibility (DSR) is a contemporary construct related to social responsibility efforts at the level of destinations rather than corporations. While DSR has become a salient topic for destinations, research approaches are still fragmented. This work discusses existing conceptualisations, followed by a systematic review. Studies have supported positive outcomes of DSR, which can be favourable towards destinations at large. Although stakeholder theory is deemed foundational in conceptualizing DSR, findings reveal the construct has been studied from the perspective of tourists or residents, whereas other stakeholders are still absent from studies. The topic is biased towards quantitative methods and settings, and a comprehensive measurement instrument and definition of DSR are called for. This review aims to outline the contribution and progress of DSR in the context of responsible tourism, propose a unifying definition of DSR, and offer avenues for future research.
- Visibility, power and exclusion: The (un)shifting constructions of normativity in wedding tourism brochuresPublication . Rydzik, Agnieszka; Agapito, Dora; Lenton, CharlotteThis article examines the trends in dominant representations of couples and places in wedding tourism promotional materials. It applies an eleven-category visibility framework to analyse 671 images from 16 years (2004-2019) of brochures from a UK-based tour operator. Content analysis shows that majority-centric imagery remains dominant throughout, with minority groups significantly under-represented, despite wider societal changes. Drawing on an intersectional approach, the article makes visible power asymmetries, omissions and inequalities in tourism representations. It argues that such exclusions and narrow portrayals of couples perpetuate not only the hegemonic messages of heteronormativity but also reinforce whiteness, age and body normativity, while maintaining gender stereotypes and intertwining traditional wedding ideals with consumerist desires for secular consumption.
