- Assessment of scatter radiation in the shielding of radiography proceduresPublication . Duarte, Maria; Rodrigues, Sónia; Ribeiro, Luís; Abrantes, António; Almeida, Rui; Azevedo, Kevin; Ribeiro, AnabelaScattered radiation is the largest contributor to patient dose and the main cause for stochastic effects (1-3). Evaluate the use of radiological protections and attenuating materials depending on the scattered radiation which the patient is subject, analyzing the appropriate placement of the protections is extremely important for the improvement of the radiographer clinical practice (4-7). Therefore, the purpose of this research is to ascertain the best way to protect irradiated patients, particularly children and pregnant women.
- Claustrophobia and Anxiety in Magnetic Resonance ImagingPublication . Lopes, Bruno; Azevedo, Kevin; Abrantes, António; Rodrigues, Sónia; Ribeiro, Luís; Vicente, Bianca; Almeida, RuiThe main goal of this research was to evaluate the anxiety and claustrophobia levels in patients undergoing Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Head, Extremities and Breast. The specific objectives were: Understand if the anatomical region of the exam (Head, Extremities or Breast) influences the anxiety and claustrophobia levels Understand if prior MRI examinations influence the anxiety and claustrophobia levels Understand if age, gender and education status influences the anxiety and claustrophobia levels.
- Clinical diagnostic reference levels in computed tomography examinationsPublication . Marques, Raquel; Rodrigues, Sónia; Abrantes, António; Ribeiro, Luís; Azevedo, Kevin; Almeida, Rui; Vicente, B.For the accomplishment of this study, CT dose descriptors such as mAs, kVp, Computed Tomography Dose Index (CTDI) and Dose Length Product (DLP) were registered for CT examinations of the brain, face, chest, spine, abdomen and pelvis, through the examination of the file dose protocol grouped into 12 different clinical indications and using a sample of 20 patients per each clinical indication. A final total of 240 examinations were considered.
- Effectiveness of shielding in computed tomography examinationsPublication . Coelho, Soraia; Azevedo, Kevin; Abrantes, António; Rodrigues, Sónia; Ribeiro, Luís; Vicente, Bianca; Almeida, Rui; Lesyuk, OksanaComputed Tomography (CT) is an important tool in providing high-quality crosssectional images of the body using ionizing radiation and computational reconstruction techniques. CT has transformed much of medical imaging by providing three-dimensional views of the organ or body region of interest. CT involves larger radiation doses than the more common, conventional x-ray imaging procedures, and technological developments have contributed to the increase of number and diversity of scanning procedures, in adults and pediatrics patients. Since an increasing number of CT scans are being obtained, the...
- Evaluation of the patient exposure dose during ERCP Fluoroscopy guided proceduresPublication . Granadas, Marisa; Rodrigues, Sónia; Sousa, Patrick; Lesyuk, Oksana; Vicente, Bianca; Almeida, Rui; Azevedo, Kevin; Ribeiro, Luís; Abrantes, AntónioEndoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a diagnostic/therapeutic fluoroscopy guided procedure that includes upper gastrointestinal endoscopy allowing the treatment of the bile and pancreatic ducts pathologies. Currently, ERCP is mostly used in therapy, which turns in to longer procedures, with potential higher doses of ionizing radiation to the patient and due to the cancer development risk it's relevant to evaluate dose exposure during ERCP. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) defined the mean dose area product (DAP) for ERCP diagnostic procedures as 15 Gy.cm2 and mean...
- Fat quantification using computerized tomographyPublication . Malveiro, Rita; Abrantes, António; Rodrigues, Sónia; Ribeiro, Luís; Azevedo, Kevin; Almeida, RuiThe purpose of this research was to quantify the volume of subcutaneous fat, visceral fat and intramuscular fat of patients that underwent computerized tomography examinations and relate this to age, gender, weight, height, waist circumference and body mass index.
- Improving patient health literacy in imaging departmentsPublication . Almeida, R. P. P.; Vicente, Bianca; Abrantes, António; Azevedo, KevinHealth Literacy is a key issue in the healthcare and its operational definition developed for the National Library of Medicine mention that is the “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions” 1. Health literacy skills are needed for dialogue and discussion, reading health information, making decisions about participating in research activities, using medical tools for personal or familial health care, and even for voting on health or environmental...
- Iodinated contrast material impact in arterial blood pressure and cardiac frequencyPublication . Gomes, Mariana; Abrantes, António; Rodrigues, Sónia; Vicente, Bianca; Azevedo, Kevin; Almeida, Rui; Ribeiro, Luís; Pinheiro, JoãoThe purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of iodinated contrast material (ICM) in arterial blood pressure (ABP) and cardiac frequency (CF) during the several scans of the computerized tomography (CT), and relate these changes to sociodemographic factors and administration conditions.
- Residual activity in a Nuclear Medicine Department: a dosimetric studyPublication . Queirós, André; Abrantes, António; Rodrigues, Sónia; Ribeiro, Luís; Azevedo, Kevin; Almeida, Rui; Pinheiro, JoãoThe exposure to ionizing radiation by radiographer in Nuclear Medicine (NM) Departments is inevitable, as this area has the highest rates of residual activity. Since 1957, and later updated (2005), several guidelines have been established by the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), for the management of residues from radioactive use for medical purposes, with the intention of increasing the radiological protection of the people and the environment. Optimized management is very important not only for the functioning of the NM department, but also for the...
