- Allochthonous-derived organic matter subsidizes the food sources of estuarine jellyfishPublication . Morais, Pedro; Dias, Ester; Cruz, Joana; Chainho, P.; Costa, J. L.; Angélico, M. M.; Barbosa, Ana; Teodosio, MariaJellyfish modulate the energy fluxes between compartments of aquatic ecosystems and the period that energy remains within each compartment. However, the contribution of different sources of organic matter (OM) to the production of most estuarine jellyfish species is unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to identify and quantify the putative sources of OM for Blackfordia virginica (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) Mayer, 1910 in two temperate estuaries, based on the analyses of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios. Zooplankton was the main source of OM assimilated by B. virginica in both Mira and Guadiana estuaries. However, particulate organic matter (POM) also contributed to B. virginica biomass, up to 26 and 37% in Mira and Guadiana estuaries, respectively. The POM pool was apparently comprised by terrestrial derived OM, as based on stable isotope ratios and C:NPOM. Terrestrial-derived OM is an undescribed carbon source for estuarine jellyfish. Our results support a working hypothesis stating that terrestrial-derived OM might support good physiological condition of B. virginica during periods of low metazooplankton abundance, through a detritus based microbial food web transformation. Subsequent studies on trophic pathways ought to evaluate the temporal contribution of autochthonous and allochthonous OM and its consequences, accounting for the connectivity across ecosystems (terrestrial-estuarine-marine) and the interactions within compartments (pelagic-benthic).
- Anthropogenic particles ingestion by fish larvae in important nursery areas of Iberia (South Europe)Publication . Zeri, Giulia; Baptista, Vânia; Teodosio, Maria; Cruz, JoanaMicroplastics (MPs) are now widespread in the marine environment, and their levels are expected to rise as larger plastic debris continues to break down and new plastic waste enters the ocean. Microplastics ingestion has been documented in fish larvae, which are already particularly vulnerable to predation, environmental stressors, and starvation. This study examines for the first time MPs ingestion by wild fish larvae in Southern Iberia, focusing on two key nursery ecosystems of Portugal: the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon and the Guadiana River estuary. Fish larvae collected monthly from surface water, between April 2023 and March 2024, exhibited encounter rates (ER - Total number of ingested particles/ Total number of organisms analysed *100) of 12.99% in Ria Formosa and 11.54% in the Guadiana estuary. No significant differences were observed in ER among taxa and locations. The ingested particles ranged in size from 20 μm to 2 mm and were predominantly made of rayon, transparent and in the form of fibres. No correlation was found between the size of the larvae and that of the ingested particles. Although larval size had a positive effect on MP ingestion, this effect was not significant. There were no differences in polymer type ingestion among taxa. Our results underline the role of nursery areas as exposure spots and the underestimated pressure of the textile industry on marine ecosystems. Further research is needed to assess the potential consequences of this exposure for larval survival, recruitment success, and the health of adult fish populations.
- Assessing the invasion risk of the cnidaria Blackfordia virginica Mayer, 1910: a threat to the Baltic Sea ecosystem?Publication . A rise in frequency and magnitude of jellyfish invasion around the world is shedding new light on these organisms. In this study, we estimate the current and future distribution of the introduced jellyfish Blackfordia virginica in the Baltic Sea. We determine the combination of favorable levels of temperature and salinity for this species by analyzing presence/absence data from areas outside the Baltic Sea and project the distribution of suitable habitat in the Baltic Sea across different scenarios with variable climate forcing and eutrophication levels. Our results show that suitability increases with rising temperature and optimal salinity range from 13 to 20 for this species. In addition, a relatively large area of the Baltic Sea represents favorable abiotic conditions for B. virginica, enhancing the concerns on its potential range expansion. Spatial analysis illustrates that the coastal areas of the southern Baltic Sea are particularly at risk for the invasion of the species. The observation of the projection of habitat suitability across time highlights that future Baltic Sea environmental conditions increase suitability levels for B. virginica and suggest a potential expansion of its distribution in the future.

Due to jellyfish biochemical properties, they may represent an opportunity as an alternative food source for humans. In this context, this work evaluated the nutritional profile of B. virginica (proximate composition, amino acids, minerals, and fatty acids methyl ester content). Blackfordia virginica biomass may be adequate for human consumption, as it has nutritional properties resembling other edible jellyfish species, with relevant levels of minerals, moderate content in crude protein, low-fat content, and a low energetic value. The high Cd levels in the biomass of B. virginica from the Guadiana Estuary may compromise its safety as a food source. Moreover, if these jellyfishes are proven as an edible invasive species, their management through fisheries should evaluate the cost effectiveness of investments.

- Distribution and composition of Decapod larvae assemblages on the Berlengas archipelago and Peniche coast (western coast of Portugal)Publication . Monteiro, Marta; Miranda Azeiteiro, Ulisses Miranda M.; Cruz, Joana; Maia, Simão; Leandro, Sérgio Miguel F.M.; Marques, Sónia CotrimFor the first time, the decapod larval community in the Berlenga and coastal Peniche region have been investigated in detail, from a short-term time series (2015 - 2020). Sampling was conducted in two locations, at Berlengas archipelago, and near the coast, at Peniche. The communities found at both stations were revealed to be 80% different in terms of species composition, but species of Brachyura, Caridea, and Anomura were the most abundant in both locations. A marked seasonality, with abundance peaks during summer and autumn, was found for the assemblages near the coast, but absent in the assemblages of the Berlenga region. This suggests that factors other than the environmental variables examined in this study may play a crucial role in shaping the assemblages more offshore. Water temperature, upwelling index, salinity, and chlorophyll-a were the main factors dictating species abundance, especially at Peniche. This emphasizes the significant role of the Iberian upwelling productivity, which in turn influences decapod communities. Also, the progressive warming of coastal water will most likely have a negative impact on the decapod meroplanktonic life forms, with further consequences on recruitment and adult life stages.
- Does consistent individual variability in pelagic fish larval behaviour affect recruitment in nursery habitats?Publication . This inter-individual variability has significant ecological and evolutionary consequences, since it affects a range of population-level processes. Here, we focus on the selection and recruitment of nursery habitats in temperate fish larvae. The "Sense Acuity and Behavioural Hypothesis" has proposed that fish larvae could detect and follow environmental cues to actively choose suitable nursery habitats. We empirically tested this hypothesis questioning if this non-random active process occurs and if it could be linked to consistency in individual behaviours. Individual larvae of the white seabream Diplodus sargus (Linnaeus, 1758) were tested repeatedly at different ages in a two-channel choice-chamber apparatus exposing them to a flow with different stimuli, as nursery habitats (lagoon, coastal), different temperatures or salinities and recording exploratory activity and preference in the different conditions. Most larvae changed behaviour during ontogeny, but they were also significantly consistent in their behaviour, revealing strong individuality; yet, no significant preference for the presented stimuli emerged, nor it was related to individuality. Exploratory activity was higher when larvae showed unresponsive or inconclusive behaviours, meaning that the larvae tried to find a different stimulus from the one that we were offering or had random habitat selection. Individual behavioural consistency could influence the process of searching for suitable nursery habitats and, consequently, dispersion and connectivity of white seabream population. Characterizing the behaviour of temperate pelagic marine fish larvae may shed light on fish recruitment variability, help refining larval dispersion models and possibly help understanding effects of climate change on population distribution and connectivity. Significance statement A Chinese idiom says that "It is easier to change mountains and rivers than to alter one's character." What about fish? Well, fish can exhibit individuality traits that control autoecological and demecological processes. For example, shy fish have lower fitness while the rate of invasion progress is faster in populations with bolder individuals. Individuality studies rarely focused on fish larvae, except for coral fish. So, we tested if temperate fish larvae display consistent behaviour throughout ontogeny. This goal delves into the Sense Acuity And Behavioural Hypothesis which incorporated behaviour into the hypotheses deeming to explain fish recruitment variability. We found that temperate fish larvae display consistent individual behavioural differences in exploratory activity since early in ontogeny. This confirms the deterministic role of pelagic fish larvae behaviour on population connectivity processes, namely to control their dispersion and choose a nursery habitat.
- Dynamics of Decapoda larvae communities in a southwest Iberian estuary: Understanding the impact of different thermal regimesPublication . Specifically, temperature can impact the survival and duration of larval development in decapod crustacean species. The objective of this study is to analyze the community of decapod larvae in the Guadiana estuary, located in southwest Iberia. The analysis focuses on the community's taxonomic composition, temporal variability, and the influence of environmental factors. Particularly, the study emphasizes investigating the impacts of different thermal regimes on the abundance of these assemblages. A comprehensive zooplankton sampling program was conducted at a single station in the lower estuary, from 2014 to 2022. The decapod larvae assemblages are dominated by Upogebia spp., followed by Diogenes pugilator, Panopeus africanus, Afropinnotheres monodi, and Polybius henslowii species. The results of structural equation modeling unveiled a strong influence of water temperature and salinity on the community, while chlorophyll-a concentration, river runoff, and the large-scale climatic mode North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) revealed no impact on the abundance of these assemblages. Overall, the community and the main taxa displayed a positive linear trend in response to increased salinity. However, the effect of increasing temperature varied among species. In the current climatic scenario, water temperature emerges as a critical factor in predicting seasonal variation of the assemblages' abundances, exhibiting a marked seasonality during spring and summer. Predictive models used to investigate future scenarios, Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 2.6 and RCP 8.5, defined by the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), where the temperature is expected to rise 2 degrees C and 4.3 degrees C by 2100, suggest the possibility for an alteration in assemblages' composition, where the abundances of D. pugilator, the second most abundant species, tend to decrease abruptly. Reported evidence, coupled with the typical Mediterranean climate of the region, where extreme climatic events, like marine heatwaves, are becoming more frequent, the high connectivity with the Mediterranean Sea, where invasion by non-indigenous species is increasing, also connected with changes in freshwater discharges, may trigger significant alterations in species dominance and abundance, with ecological and socio-economic implications.
- Effects of temperature, food type and food concentration on the grazing of the calanoid copepod Centropages chierchiaePublication . Garrido, Susana; Cruz, Joana; Santos, A.M.P.; Re, Pedro; Saiz, EnricLaboratory experiments were conducted to study the combined effect of temperature (8, 13, 19 and 24C), food type and food concentration on the grazing rates of the adult stages of the calanoid copepod Centropages chierchiae. As prey, the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum and the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium sp. (both ca. 15 m cell diameter) were used at a range of carbon concentrations similar to the ones experienced in nature (6.4 to 393.8 C L-1). Ingestion rates increased linearly with food concentration and did not differ between prey types. When comparing the effect of temperature, highest clearance and ingestion rates were obtained at 19C, whereas no difference was observed among the other temperatures. Daily rations varied between 1.2 and 183.5 body carbon day(1). Additional experiments were conducted to study the selective feeding behaviour of C. chierchiae when offered a mixture of different prey types. Selective feeding was dependent on food concentration; at low food levels, large cells were selected (Ditylum brightwellii), whereas at medium and high food concentrations no clear selection patterns were observed. In contrast to other studies, no positive selection of dinoflagellates over other algal food was found.
- Feeding ecology of sicydium bustamantei (Greeff 1884, Gobiidae) post-larvae: the “Little Fish” of São Tomé IslandPublication . Baptista, Vânia; Dias, Ester; Cruz, Joana; Branco, Maria; Vieira, Sara; Teodosio, Maria AlexandraThe rivers of São Tomé Island are colonized by Sicydium bustamantei (Greeff 1882), an amphidromous fish that spawns in those areas. After hatching, larvae drift to the ocean with the river flow. In the marine realm, the planktonic larvae develop and migrate to freshwater as post-larvae. The migrations of post-larvae support important local fisheries at the mouth of rivers in tropical volcanic islands. Amphidromous post-larvae rely on plankton as their main source of organic matter. However, the biology and ecology of S. bustamantei in the West African islands are understudied, despite its importance for local fisheries. Thus, this study aimed to start bridging this gap by studying its feeding ecology. Our objectives were to identify the main prey of S. bustamantei post-larvae, combining gut content with stable isotope analyses. The gut contents included zooplankton (Chaetognatha, Ostracoda, and unidentified crustaceans), debris from plant and/or macroalgae-derived material, and microplastics (including microfibers). The stable isotopes analysis indicated that zooplankton and macroalgae detritus were the main sources of organic matter assimilated by this species. We also demonstrated that S. bustamantei post-larvae are omnivorous and secondary consumers. These data provide pioneering information that can be used in management plans that still need to be developed.
