- The contribution of tourism experiences to eudaimonic well-being: insight from Generation ZPublication . Bagheri, Fatemeh; Martins Guerreiro, Maria Manuela; Pinto, Patrícia; Ghaderi, ZahedDespite the growing interest in exploring the tourism experiences of Generation Z and their significant influence on the tourism industry, there is a dearth of investigation into the eudaimonic consequences of tourism among this cohort. Eudaimonic well-being refers to understanding yourself, having a meaningful life, and actively pursuing excellence. Drawing on the psychological well-being approach, this study explores how Generation Z describes the long-term eudaimonic effects of tourism experiences in their lifetime. The qualitative findings reveal seven key themes that elucidate the eudaimonic dimensions of travel experiences among Generation Z, categorised into three more general and interconnected groups: individual characteristics, interpersonal experiences, and societal influences. The seven central themes include authentic self-development, mastery of challenges, interpersonal bonds, spirituality and mindfulness, future professional advancement, conscientiousness, and hedonic happiness. This study advances existing eudaimonic well-being frameworks and contributes to 'tourism and well-being'. Additionally, implications for tourism academics and practitioners are provided.
- Exploring children’s travel well-being through drawingsPublication . This study explores children's travel preferences by analysing their drawings, revealing factors that enhance their well-being and engagement. We analysed 214 drawings from girls aged 8 to 11 from three schools in Tehran, Iran. The drawings illustrated playful activities, nature-based experiences, and cultural explorations with family and peers. Using visual content analysis, the findings suggest that children value interactive, educational travel experiences, enhancing their happiness and developmental growth. The research highlights the importance of considering children's perspectives in tourism planning and emphasizes family, social interactions, and environmental engagement in contributing to children's well-being. It also addresses the methodological limitations and cultural influences on their travel preferences.
- Female entrepreneurship, creating shared value, and empowerment in tourism; the neutralizing effect of gender-based discriminationPublication . Bagheri, Fatemeh; Ghaderi, Zahed; Abdi, Naser; Hall, Colin MichaelGiven the significance of entrepreneurial women's contribution to the tourism industry and the fifth UN Sustainable Development Goal (gender equality) this study aims to investigate: first, the interrelationship between women entrepreneurship, creating shared value, and women's empowerment; and second, the effect of gender-based discriminations on women's entrepreneurship, creation shared value, and women's empowerment in the tourism context. Data were collected from 167 Iranian women operating various tourism-related enterprises and analysed using structural equation modelling in WarpPLS software. The results highlight the positive direct and indirect effects of female entrepreneurship on women's empowerment and the importance of the mediating role of creating shared value between these two constructs. The results also confirmed the negative impacts of gender-based discrimination in entrepreneurship and creating shared value for female tourism entrepreneurs in Iran. The practical implications of the study, limitations, and potential directions for future research are discussed.
- From tourist experience to satisfaction and loyalty: exploring the role of a sense of well-beingPublication . Bagheri, Fatemeh; Guerreiro, Manuela; Pinto, Patrícia; Ghaderi, ZahedDrawing on the authentic happiness theory, the aims of this article are three-fold: first, to propose a refined measurement scale for tourists’ sense of well-being; second, to investigate the impact of four categories of tourist experience on tourists’ sense of well-being; and third, to explore the effect of the sense of well-being on tourists’ satisfaction and loyalty. Data were collected from tourists spending their holidays in the Algarve, Portugal. To address the lack of an integrated measurement scale for assessing tourists’ sense of well-being, an exploratory factor analysis was initially conducted. Subsequently, the data were analyzed using structural equation modeling in WarpPLS 8.0. The findings reveal a three-dimensional scale for tourists’ sense of well-being, consisting of meaningfulness, active pleasure, and release. The results also show a significant positive impact of the four realms of tourists’ experiences on the sense of well-being. Finally, positive relationships between well-being, tourist satisfaction and loyalty are confirmed. The theoretical and practical implications, limitations, and potential directions for future research are discussed.
- Green supply chain management, environmental costs and supply chain performance in the hotel industry: the mediating role of supply chain agility and resiliencePublication . Ghaderi, Zahed; Shakori, Hanieh; Bagheri, Fatemeh; Hall, Colin Michael; Rather, Raouf Ahmad; Moaven, ZahraAlthough developing a green supply chain is a topic of growing interest in the hotel industry, research on hospitality green supply chain management (GSCM) is limited. This study investigates the effect of internal and external measures of GSCM on environmental cost reduction, and how environmental cost reduction improves the supply chain performance with the mediating role of agility and resilience of a green supply chain. Data were collected from 370 employees of the top-rated hotels in Tehran, Iran, and analyzed using structural equation modelling in SmartPLS software. The findings revealed that internal and external measures of green supply chain management have a positive and significant effect on the environmental cost reduction of hotels. The reduction in environmental costs directly affected the variables of green supply chain agility, green supply chain resilience and green supply chain performance. The findings also confirmed the mediating role of green supply chain agility and resilience between environmental cost reduction and green supply chain performance. Overall, the study reinforces that addressing environmental measures in the hotel industry could have favourable consequences for hotels to improve supply chain performance.
- Islamic views on local tourism engagement in conservative societies: an insight from OmanPublication . Ghaderi, Zahed; Tavakoli, Rokhshad; Yarahmadi, Farzaneh; Bagheri, Fatemeh; Almuhrzi, Hamed MohammedUnderstanding the diverse viewpoints within host communities is vital for achieving sustainable tourism development. While literature often addresses pro-tourism perspectives, scant attention is given to anti-tourism factions (unsupportive cohort of society) and those not directly benefiting. The current study addresses this gap, employing social exchange and social distance theories to explore opposition to Western-style tourism. Interviews with 22 respondents across five traditional villages in Oman reveal concerns about religious and cultural preservation, privacy, and lifestyle. The results showed that perceptions of social distance significantly shape community attitudes and behaviours towards tourists, particularly those perceived as cultural outsiders. Despite challenges, respondents adopt a nuanced approach, balancing cultural preservation with respect for tourists. Findings further illustrate that communities use symbolic markers to maintain cultural identity and cohesion amid external pressures and perceived risks. The study offers insights into culturally sensitive tourism strategies in religiously conservative societies.
- The role of gender equality in Iranian female tourism entrepreneurs’ successPublication . Ghaderi, Zahed; Tavakoli, Rokhshad; Bagheri, Fatemeh; Pavee, SaeedehGender (in)equality in entrepreneurship has been getting more attention in recent decades. The number of female entrepreneurs repeatedly reported less than males due to cultural issues, education, and lack of support. Moreover, launching start-up apiaries is more challenging for Asian women in tourism, and the likelihood of unsuccessful experiences is higher among them. Accordingly, the lack of empirical material on female entrepreneurs in tourism and gender equality issues, especially in middle east countries, are the two main gaps. Therefore, this paper tries to reveal the Iranian female entrepreneurship experience to fulfil these gaps. This research applied a qualitative research design leading with social constructivism and critical theory. 12 Iranian female tourism entrepreneurs participated in semi-structured online interviews. The snowball sampling technique was applied to collect data that was analysed thematically. The findings of this study highlighted that family responsibility, legal disparities, credit constraints, and the social construction of gender roles and norms are among the hurdles restricting females from engaging in social and economic opportunities. Moreover, the participants mentioned that the lack of social, government, and sponsors' support and a platform for training and sharing peers' experiences impact their businesses.
- Women’s fight for equality in tourism and hospitality; insights from conservative culturesPublication . Ghaderi, Zahed; Bagheri, Fatemeh; Makian, Sarasadat; Sinha, RupaDespite women's robust participation in low- and middle-level roles in tourism and hospitality, their ascent to managerial and executive positions faces considerable challenges. The paucity of empirical studies delving into women's perspectives exacerbates this issue. This study attempts to fill this void by examining the underrepresentation of women in managerial roles across conservative cultures such as India, Iran, and Oman. In-depth interviews were conducted with 35 actively engaged female professionals to elucidate this phenomenon. Employing Gender Schema Theory, our findings uncover the initiation of efforts to dismantle barriers to advancement, yet underscore the enduring influence of societal norms, cultural barriers, and organisational structures in impeding progress towards gender parity in higher managerial echelons. The study concludes by examining the theoretical and practical applications of the findings and proposing directions for future research.
