- Portuguese validation of the brief peer conflict scale: Validity, reliability and invariance across genderPublication . Pechorro, Pedro; Hayes, Nicole; Goncalves, Mariana; Palma, Victor Hugo; Goncalves, Rui Abrunhosa; Marsee, MonicaAggression is a multidimensional construct comprised of different forms and functions, the assessment of which has important implications for understanding externalizing problems in male and female youth. The main aim of the present study is to examine the psychometric properties of a form and function aggression measure, the Brief Peer Conflict Scale 20 (PCS-20) among a community sample of youth (N = 470,M = 15.89 years,SD = 1.00 years) from Portugal, divided into females (n = 213) and males (n = 257). The original four-factor latent structure of the PCS-20 obtained an adequate fit using confirmatory factor analysis, and strong cross gender invariance was demonstrated. The PCS-20 also demonstrated adequate reliability (measured by the Omega and Alpha coefficients), convergent and discriminant validities, criterion validity, and known-groups validity. Our findings support the use of the PCS-20 among Portuguese juveniles as a short measure of the forms and functions of aggression.
- The barratt impulsiveness scale - 11 among a portuguese sample of female juvenile delinquents and community youthsPublication . Pechorro, Pedro; Nunes Dourado, Lara Fernanda; Nunes, C.; Maia, Angela; Goncalves, Rui AbrunhosaImpulsivity among incarcerated female juvenile offenders is an understudied area of research. The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale version 11 (BIS-11) among a Portuguese sample of female participants (N = 377, mean age = 16.23 years, SD = 1.38) recruited from forensic and school contexts. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed the expected six-factor first-order structure, but not the three-factor second-order structure. Acceptable levels of internal consistency were mostly obtained, but some dimensions showed somewhat lower than expected values. Convergent validity with measures of psychopathic and callous-unemotional traits, and discriminant validity with a measure of social anxiety was demonstrated. In terms of criterion-related validity significant associations were found with relevant variables (e.g., age of crime onset, conduct disorder symptoms, alcohol, and drug use). The use of the BIS-11 among female juvenile delinquents and community youth is psychometrically justified and it can be considered a useful measure to identify impulsive adolescents.
- The brief self-control scale and its refined version among incarcerated and community youths: psychometrics and measurement invariancePublication . Pechorro, Pedro; DeLisi, Matt; Goncalves, Rui Abrunhosa; Quintas, Jorge; Hugo Palma, VictorSelf-control refers to the ability to override impulses and behave in accordance with societal norms, and deficits in self-control are strongly associated with conduct problems, externalizing disorders, crime, and violence. Here, we examine the psychometric properties of the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) and its refined version (BSCS-R) among a forensic sample (n = 131) of incarcerated male youth and a school sample of male (n = 257) and female (n = 213) youth from Portugal. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the original one-factor structure of the BSCS and the refined two-factor structure of the BSCS-R obtained adequate fits. The BSCS demonstrated strong measurement invariance across gender and setting (forensic versus school), while the BSCS-R only revealed gender measurement invariance. The BSCS also tended to perform better that the BSCS-R in terms of other psychometric properties, including internal consistency measured by Alpha and Omega coefficients, discriminant and convergent validities, criterion validity, and known-groups validity. Findings support the use of the BSCS among justice-involved and community youth, but caution is advised regarding the use of its refined version in forensic settings.
- Validation study of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory-13 among a school sample of Portuguese youthsPublication . Pechorro, Pedro; Nunes, Cristina; Goncalves, Rui Abrunhosa; Simoes, Mario R.; Oliveira, Joao PedroThe main aim of the present study was to translate and validate the Narcissistic Personality Inventory-13 (NPI-13) among a school sample (N=543) of male and female Portuguese youths. The NPI-13 demonstrated good psychometric properties, namely in terms of its three-factor structure, internal consistency, convergent validity, discriminant validity and criterion-related validity. Positive correlations were found with Conduct Disorder symptoms, alcohol use, drug use and unprotected sex. The psychometric properties of the NPI-13 mostly justify its use among Portuguese adolescents in a school context.
