- Weight-length relationships for fish species discarded in commercial fisheries of the Algarve (southern Portugal)Publication . Borges, Teresa C.; Olim, S.; Erzini, KarimWeight and length descriptive statistics are reported for 73 fish species discarded in the commercial fisheries from the south coast of Portugal. Parameters of the weight-length relationship were estimated for 57 of these species. These are the first weight-length parameters reported for 20 of these species. For an additional 16 species for which no weight-length parameters have been reported, the parameter a was estimated by setting b = 3.0. Samples were used from five gear types: crustacean trawler, fish trawler, pelagic purse seine, demersal purse seine and trammel net. Samples were obtained from depths ranging from <30 m to >500 m and included pelagic and demersal species.
- Educational level, socioeconomic status and aphasia research: A comment on Connor et al. (2001) - Effect of socioeconomic status on aphasia severity and recoveryPublication . Reis, Alexandra; Petersson, Karl MagnusIs there a relation between socioeconomic factors and aphasia severity and recovery? Connor, Obler, Tocco, Fitzpatrick, and Albert (2001) describe correlations between the educational level and socioeconomic status of aphasic subjects with aphasia severity and subsequent recovery. As stated in the introduction by Connor et al. (2001), studies of the influence of educational level and literacy (or illiteracy) on aphasia severity have yielded conflicting results, while no significant link between socioeconomic status and aphasia severity and recovery has been established. In this brief note, we will comment on their findings and conclusions, beginning first with a brief review of literacy and aphasia research, and complexities encountered in these fields of investigation. This serves as a general background to our specific comments on Connor et al. (2001), which will be focusing on methodological issues and the importance of taking normative values in consideration when subjects with different socio-cultural or socio-economic backgrounds are assessed. - Spacetime-varying couplings and Lorentz violationPublication . Kostelecky, V. Alan; Lehnert, Ralf; Perry, Malcom J.Spacetime-varying coupling constants can be associated with violations of local Lorentz invariance and CPT symmetry. An analytical supergravity cosmology with a time-varying fine-structure constant provides an explicit example. Estimates are made for some experimental constraints.
- Spring-summer climatological circulation in the upper layer in the region of Cape St. Vincent, Southwest PortugalPublication . Sanchez, R. F.; Relvas, PauloGeostrophic transport and hydrographic measurements derived from a historical database (1900-1998) were used to study the spring-summer mean circulation in the upper layer south and west of Cape St. Vincent, Southwest (SW) Portugal. The larger-scale circulation scheme is forced by equatorward winds from May to September, when the Iberian coastal transition zone (CTZ) is dominated by a generalized upwelling of cold, low-salinity water. A partially separated surface jet intensified at the shelf break conveys similar to1 Sv of upwelled water equatorward parallel to the bathymetry, while offshore a poleward flow transports similar to0.4-0.6 Sv of upwelled water. Although alongshore transports dominate the circulation pattern of the upper layers, cross-shore transports are significant at the climatological scale. Anticyclonic circulation with an exchange of similar to0.5 Sv from the equatorward jet to the offshore poleward flow and the partial re-circulation further north, back into the equatorward flow are discussed. A coherent, cyclonic re-circulation pattern inshore of the upwelling jet is also speculated. From these results the shelf break is considered a climatological border at both sides of which two major re-circulation cells occur. The climatological equatorward flow has offshore protrusions, interpreted as recurrent episodes of major contortions of the upwelling flow. These features bring about considerable "cross-shelf flow" re-circulation reaching up to 50% of the main flow. The most significant exchanges are found to be associated with major changes of orientation of the coastline. Off Cape St. Vincent the upwelling front stretches to both west and south and contributes to the cross-shelf re-circulations. Additionally, convergence of the upwelling flow and a branch of the Azores current, with associated re-circulation is found diagonally from the cape. On the southern coast the upwelling jet is seen to meander offshore in the vicinity of Cape St. Maria. Individual synoptic cruise data showed agreement with the climatological circulation features. We conclude that these oceanographic features leave an imprint on the climatic circulation in spite of the "smoothing out" of recurrent events over the spring-summer period of the years of 1900-1998. - A framework for blood flow analysis and researchPublication . Ruano, Maria; Da Cruz Silva Andrade Madeira E Carvalho De Moura, Maria Margarida; Leiria, A.; Garcia, F.; Moreno, E.A framework to support research and clinical applications on ultrasound Doppler blood flow signals' analysis was created by integration of several subsystems into a portable computer application. Several alternatives of the different subsystems were integrated allowing the comparison amongst them. Aiming initially the study of carotid artery blood flow signals, the framework is being extended to encompass different vases -such as the mean cerebral artery - and some cardiac valves -such as the aortic and mitral valves. Developed upon Debian Linux distribution, but portable to other operating systems, the application components considered were built from open source software.
