- The collaborative economy based analysis of demand: Study of Airbnb case in Spain and PortugalPublication . Palos-Sanchez, Pedro R.; Correia, Marisol B.The rise of the collaborative economy has just started to become a reality in the economy of the countries in the European Union. The aim of this article is to use Goal - Question - Metric methodology to verify that the rise of Internet searches has an impact on collaborative economy. Specifically, Airbnb was the collaborative economy service analyzed. The demonstration was carried out with a statistical analysis of the Internet searches, looking at their evolution in Spain, Portugal and USA over the past 10 years. A working hypothesis was also defined to test whether the demand for information about Airbnb has a positive influence on the total spending of tourists who booked apartments in Spain during the period between July 2015 and August 2016. The results lead us to make a projection of growth for Airbnb service in the coming years. The case studied is very representative of this economic model, even though there is a large number of lesser-known websites. Finally, the results corroborate previous studies that defend that tools for studying trends and correlations of search terms are techniques that help decision making in studies and market research.

- Harnessing positive species interactions as a tool against climate-driven loss of coastal biodiversityPublication . Bulleri, Fabio; Eriksson, Britas Klemens; Queiros, Ana; Airoldi, Laura; Arenas, Francisco; Arvanitidis, Christos; Bouma, Tjeerd J.; Crowe, Tasman P.; Davoult, Dominique; Guizien, Katell; Ivesa, Ljiljana; Jenkins, Stuart R.; Michalet, Richard; Olabarria, Celia; Procaccini, Gabriele; Serrao, Ester; Wahl, Martin; Benedetti-Cecchi, LisandroHabitat-forming species sustain biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in harsh environments through the amelioration of physical stress. Nonetheless, their role in shaping patterns of species distribution under future climate scenarios is generally overlooked. Focusing on coastal systems, we assess how habitat-forming species can influence the ability of stress-sensitive species to exhibit plastic responses, adapt to novel environmental conditions, or track suitable climates. Here, we argue that habitat-former populations could be managed as a nature-based solution against climate-driven loss of biodiversity. Drawing from different ecological and biological disciplines, we identify a series of actions to sustain the resilience of marine habitat-forming species to climate change, as well as their effectiveness and reliability in rescuing stress-sensitive species from increasingly adverse environmental conditions.
- The performance of Remicade (R)-optimized quantification assays in the assessment of Flixabi (R) levelsPublication . Magro, F.; Rocha, C.; Vieira, A. I.; Sousa, H. T.; Rosa, I; Lopes, S.; Carvalho, J.; Dias, C. C.; Afonso, J.Background: The advent of Remicade (R) biosimilars, Remsima (R), Inflectra (R) and, more recently, Flixabi (R), has brought along the potential to decrease the costs associated with this therapy, therefore increasing its access to a larger group of patients. However, and in order to assure a soft transition, one must make sure the assays and algorithms previously developed and optimized for Remicade perform equally well with its biosimilars. This study aimed to: (a) validate the utilization of Remicade-optimized therapeutic drug monitoring assays for the quantification of Flixabi; and (b) determine the existence of Remicade, Remsima and Flixabi cross-immunogenicity. Methods: Healthy donors' sera spiked with Remicade, Remsima and Flixabi were quantified using three different Remicade-quantification assays, and the reactivity of anti-Remicade and anti-Remsima sera to Remicade and to its biosimilars was assessed. Results: The results show that all tested Remicade-infliximab-optimized assays measure Flixabi as accurately as they measure Remicade and Remsima: the intraclass correlation coefficients between theoretical and measured concentrations varied from 0.920 to 0.990. Moreover, the interassay agreement values for the same compounds were high (intraclass correlation coefficients varied from 0.936 to 0.995). Finally, the anti-Remicade and anti-Remsima sera reacted to the different drugs in a similar fashion. Conclusions: The tested assays can be used to monitor Flixabi levels. Moreover, Remicade, Remsima and Flixabi were shown to have a high cross-immunogenicity, which supports their high similarity but prevents their switching in nonresponders with antidrug antibodies.
- Analysis of social networks as an instrument of communication in the tourist destinations of AlgarvePublication . Sanchez Jimenez, Miguel Angel; Correia, Marisol B.; Matos, NelsonThe future of social media and the ability to measure its impact has generated much debate as companies have adopted the use of social media platforms to communicate their products. The calculation of this impact can be a complex task but the entity that does not do so will jeopardize its ability to demonstrate the full benefits of its business. Consumers now have the opportunity to comment on their experiences and opinions in these social media and hope to participate in a conversation with the brand. This fact has gained even more impact in the tourism sector due to the great influence that other opinions and experiences have on the tourist's choice. Thus, the tourist offer must now build its strategies incorporating this dialogue and measuring the impact on its brands to make the right strategic and tactical decisions. Thus, in this study the activity and effectiveness of official social networks by the different tourist areas of the Algarve was analyzed, through the measurement of indicators obtained through the online analysis tool Fanpage Karma. In the results, Facebook stands out as the main social network of the Algarve tourist destinations in which all the municipalities actively participate in said network, generating a very good commitment or engagement, thus improving the image and reputation of said destinations. Also note the scarce presence and engagement of Twitter and the importance of images and videos in the social networks of the tourism sector.
- Returns to education and female participation Nexus: Evidence from IndiaPublication . Kanjilal-Bhaduri, Sanghamitra; Pastore, FrancescoIn this paper, we aim to understand whether low labour market returns to education in India are responsible for low female work participation. The National Sample Survey Ofce—Employment Unemployment Survey unit level data of India for the year 2011–2012 is used to examine the relationship between educational attainment and labour market participation through gender lens. Results show that women’s education has a U-shaped relationship with paid work participation. The probability to participate in the paid labour market increases with education levels higher than compulsory secondary schooling. The labour market returns to education are insignifcant and low for lower levels of education, increasing signifcantly along the educational levels. Technical education equivalent to degree level or above has high returns for men and women. However, women with technical education have very low levels of participation. Vocational training also provides a positive return. Our results suggest that to increase participation, women need to be educated above secondary level and receive broader technical education and more vocational training.
- Deep reefs of the Great Barrier Reef offer limited thermal refuge during mass coral bleachingPublication . Rodrigues Frade, Pedro; Bongaerts, Pim; Englebert, Norbert; Rogers, Alice; Gonzalez-Rivero, Manuel; Hoegh-Guldberg, OveOur rapidly warming climate is threatening coral reefs as thermal anomalies trigger mass coral bleaching events. Deep (or "mesophotic") coral reefs are hypothesised to act as major ecological refuges from mass bleaching, but empirical assessments are limited. We evaluated the potential of mesophotic reefs within the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and adjacent Coral Sea to act as thermal refuges by characterising long-term temperature conditions and assessing impacts during the 2016 mass bleaching event. We found that summer upwelling initially provided thermal relief at upper mesophotic depths (40 m), but then subsided resulting in anomalously warm temperatures even at depth. Bleaching impacts on the deep reefs were severe (40% bleached and 6% dead colonies at 40 m) but significantly lower than at shallower depths (60-69% bleached and 8-12% dead at 5-25 m). While we confirm that deep reefs can offer refuge from thermal stress, we highlight important caveats in terms of the transient nature of the protection and their limited ability to provide broad ecological refuge.
- Meta-analysis of northeast Atlantic marine taxa shows contrasting phylogeographic patterns following post-LGM expansionsPublication . Jenkins, Tom L.; Castilho, Rita; Stevens, Jamie R.Background. Comparative phylogeography enables the study of historical and evolutionary processes that have contributed to shaping patterns of contemporary genetic diversity across co-distributed species. In this study, we explored genetic structure and historical demography in a range of coastal marine species across the northeast Atlantic to assess whether there are commonalities in phylogeographic patterns across taxa and to evaluate whether the timings of population expansions were linked to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Methods. A literature search was conducted using Web of Science. Search terms were chosen to maximise the inclusion of articles reporting on population structure and phylogeography from the northeast Atlantic; titles and abstracts were screened to identify suitable articles within the scope of this study. Given the proven utility of mtDNA in comparative phylogeography and the availability of these data in the public domain, a meta-analysis was conducted using published mtDNA gene sequences. A standardised methodology was implemented to ensure that the genealogy and demographic history of all mtDNA datasets were reanalysed in a consistent and directly comparable manner. Results. Mitochondrial DNA datasets were built for 21 species. The meta-analysis revealed significant population differentiation in 16 species and four main types of haplotype network were found, with haplotypes in some species unique to specific geographical locations. A signal of rapid expansion was detected in 16 species, whereas five species showed evidence of a stable population size. Corrected mutation rates indicated that the majority of expansions were estimated to have occurred after the earliest estimate for the LGM (similar to 26.5 Kyr), while few expansions were estimated to have pre-dated the LGM. Conclusion. This study suggests that post-LGM expansion appeared to be common in a range of marine taxa, supporting the concept of rapid expansions after the LGM as the ice sheets started to retreat. However, despite the commonality of expansion patterns in many of these taxa, phylogeographic patterns appear to differ in the species included in this study. This suggests that species-specific evolutionary processes, as well as historical events, have likely influenced the distribution of genetic diversity of marine taxa in the northeast Atlantic.
- Gil Vicente e a cultura popularPublication .
