- Work engagement and some of its antecedents: a contribution to healthcare workers performance in GhanaPublication . Adomako, Seth; Almeida, H.As nations continue to recover from the impact of the covid – 19 pandemic, developing countries such as Ghana are not an exception and as such other forms of motivation which do not involve lots of financial commitments need to be given attention to enhance employee performance for increased productivity. This work addresses the problem of over-reliance on financial forms of motivation in motivating healthcare workers in Ghana. The aim of this study was to verify the relationships between social support, engagement and empowerment in healthcare services by health workers in Ghana. One hundred health professionals whose work contributes to the delivery of quality healthcare in the health facility were administered the questionnaire. The resulting data were subjected to both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the T-Test revealed significant differences in gender for the variables studied, engagement, social support, and structural empowerment. Regarding empowerment (opportunity and resources), there were significant differences in means between females and males. Significant relationships between the variables social support (from superiors), a engagement – dedicação and empowerment – resources, was proved. And the mediator effect of social support (from superiors) between engagement – dedicação and empowerment – resources, was proved. Health care supervisors are fundamental components in creating the necessary social support for the development of positive work environments, which foster high levels of engagement and perception of resources empowered, by healthcare professionals. One of the limitations of this ttudy, is the convenience sample used. In future studies, longitudinal design studies would be needed to assess the effect of supervisor social support over time. It is recommended that further research include a more extensive probing into the relationship between empowerment and performance of employees trying to expand the body of knowledge in the area of engagement in Ghana to make a valid generalisation.
- The diversity of fish larvae in the Bons Sinais Estuary (Mozambique) and its role as a nursery to marine fish resourcesPublication . Mocuba, Jeremias; Leitão, Francisco; Teodosio, MariaThe study of assemblages of fish in their early phases in estuaries is an essential approach to understanding the functioning of these types of ecosystems and their role as nursery grounds for some marine fish species. The main aim of this study was to analyze the ichthyoplankton assemblage in the Bons Sinais Estuary, specifically to clarify the use of this area by species of socio-economic interest. This study identified 22 fish larval taxa among families, genera, and species. Gobiidae (54%), a group of resident species, dominated the community. The larval taxa of socio-economic importance (Thryssa sp., Clupeidae, Sillago sihama, Johnius dussumieri, Pellona ditchela, Pomadasys kaakan, Cichlidae, and Mugilidae) accounted for 23% of the total abundance. Larval density (N◦/100 m3 ) varied spatially and temporally, with higher density and diversity values both in the middle zone and in the wet season. Multivariate analyses revealed that salinity, temperature, and water transparency had a strong influence on larval abundance and density. While most fish larvae were in the post-flexion stage, there was a predominance of pre-flexion larvae in the lower estuary and in the post-flexion stage in the middle and upper zones, especially for marine fish resources, showing the role of this estuarine habitat as a nursery area.
- Designing robust forecasting ensembles of Data-Driven Models with a Multi-Objective Formulation: An application to Home Energy Management SystemsPublication . Ruano, Antonio; Ruano, MariaThis work proposes a procedure for the multi-objective design of a robust forecasting ensemble of data-driven models. Starting with a data-selection algorithm, a multi-objective genetic algorithm is then executed, performing topology and feature selection, as well as parameter estimation. From the set of non-dominated or preferential models, a smaller sub-set is chosen to form the ensemble. Prediction intervals for the ensemble are obtained using the covariance method. This procedure is illustrated in the design of four different models, required for energy management systems. Excellent results were obtained by this methodology, superseding the existing alternatives. Further research will incorporate a robustness criterion in MOGA, and will incorporate the prediction intervals in predictive control techniques.
