- Towards Green IT: Assessing the environmental impact of Public AdministrationPublication . Landum, Manuel; Madeira e Moura, Maria Margarida; Reis, LeonildeThe Public Administration (PA) in Portugal is impacted by the constant acceleration and evolution of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), where the Portuguese State, transposing European Union directives, has legislated and encouraged their use as instruments of added value for the PA. Establishing rigorous and sustainable governance is crucial, ensuring that the organization’s strategic objectives are aligned with ICT and, preferably, with Green IT practices. In this context, it is necessary to be able to estimate and subsequently evaluate the impact of strategic and operational choices on improving environmental quality. For such, this article presents a framework developed to optimize ICT management practices and indicators that, in this environmental area, support the forecasting and assessment of the impact of the choices made in the search for technologically advanced solutions in the Barreiro municipality. These choices enable, among other things, a reduction in energy consumption, implying a reduction in financial costs, resulting in environmental benefits, such as a reduction in CO2 emissions into the atmosphere or less deforestation. The results presented, obtained in a real-world context, make it possible to assess the progress of alignment with Green IT in this area, as well as the overall result.
- Impacto da pandemia por Covid-19 no nível de eficiência do setor hoteleiro português: análise exploratória através da utilização do data envelopment analysisPublication . Mendes, Inês Calado; Santos, Sérgio Pereira dos; Amado, CarlaO contexto global de forte concorrência e alterações económicas constantes conduz à necessidade fulcral de avaliação do desempenho e avaliação de eficiência. Como tal, existe uma carência e crescente preocupação em disponibilizar informação para a tomada de decisão num dos setores mais impactantes na economia de países e regiões. O turismo, e a ele interligado o setor hoteleiro, apresentam-se como uma vertente crucial na economia mundial, tendo sofrido uma feroz quebra com o aparecimento do Covid-19 e todas as restrições a ele associadas. Com o objetivo de avaliar a eficiência relativa no setor hoteleiro, e de que forma esta foi afetada pela pandemia, a presente dissertação aplica a metodologia Data Envelopment Analysis (com orientação output) e o Índice de Produtividade de Malmquist a 45 unidades hoteleiras do distrito de Faro. Os resultados obtidos demonstram que a eficiência relativa encontrada para as unidades de decisão é consideravelmente baixa entre 2018 e 2022, existindo um grande espaço para melhoria neste setor, tanto a nível de eficiência de gestão como de escala. Igualmente, através do Índice de Malmquist, verifica-se uma queda considerável no nível de produtividade para o ano de maior impacto de Covid. Com uma progressão positiva nos anos seguintes, 2021 e 2022, é possível concluir que a produtividade do setor recuperou na totalidade das consequências da pandemia, quando comparada com valores de 2018.
- Repurposing therapeutic drugs complexed to Vanadium in CancerPublication . De Sousa-Coelho, Ana Luísa; Fraqueza, Gil; Aureliano, M.Repurposing drugs by uncovering new indications for approved drugs accelerates the process of establishing new treatments and reduces the high costs of drug discovery and development. Metal complexes with clinically approved drugs allow further opportunities in cancer therapy—many vanadium compounds have previously shown antitumor effects, which makes vanadium a suitable metal to complex with therapeutic drugs, potentially improving their efficacy in cancer treatment. In this review, covering the last 25 years of research in the field, we identified non-oncology-approved drugs suitable as ligands to obtain different vanadium complexes. Metformin-decavanadate, vanadium-bisphosphonates, vanadyl(IV) complexes with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and cetirizine and imidazole-based oxidovanadium(IV) complexes, each has a parent drug known to have different medicinal properties and therapeutic indications, and all showed potential as novel anticancer treatments. Nevertheless, the precise mechanisms of action for these vanadium compounds against cancer are still not fully understood.
- Passos para a criação de uma loja online - o caso de uma loja de esoterismoPublication . Santos, Micael Lourenço; Machado, CarlaEste relatório de projeto aborda a problemática da construção de uma loja online e desenvolve-se no âmbito da obtenção do grau Mestre em Gestão de Marketing, na Faculdade de Economia da Universidade do Algarve. O objetivo principal do projeto centrou-se em obter um manual com os passos para a criação de uma loja online, com o intuito de contribuir para um maior esclarecimento face ao tema, servindo como ferramenta de apoio para pequenas e médias empresas que procurem criar ou tenham criado uma loja online. No decorrer do relatório foram abordadas as etapas essenciais que visam a criação e manutenção de um e-commerce, alvo de uma investigação detalhada de conceitos, ferramentas e técnicas relevantes para o tema abordado. Os resultados deste projeto culminaram num manual abrangente interpelando todas as etapas de construção importantes na criação de uma loja online bem-sucedida. Assim como, numa estratégia de otimização relativa a motores de busca com sugestões e boas práticas com o objetivo de aumentar a visibilidade da loja online nesses mesmos mecanismos de pesquisa. A pesquisa resultou também em estratégias de otimização de conversões, incluindo formas de lidar com carrinhos abandonados, promoções, conteúdo, chat, email marketing e outras temáticas resultantes do contexto de vendas online. Os resultados deste projeto permitem contribuir significativamente para uma melhor compreensão do contexto das lojas online, oferecendo um vasto leque de ferramentas e informações valiosas para profissionais e empreendedores que procuram vingar no mercado online.
- Current information on seagrass habitats of the Banc d´Arguin National Park, MauritaniaPublication . BA, Mamadou Abdoul; Serrão, EsterSeagrass beds play an essential role in coastal ecosystems, providing critical habitat, carbon sequestration and numerous ecosystem services. The Banc d'Arguin National Park (PNBA) in Mauritania is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich marine biodiversity and unique coastal ecosystems structured by extensive marine vegetation. Seagrass meadows, in particular, are extremely important in this protected area, for supporting a multitude of ecosystem services and ecological functions. This study aims to compile and update the most recent information gathered as part of our work on seagrass habitats and their associated species in the Banc d'Arguin National Park over the last five years. The information gathered shows that three seagrass species are widespread along the coast of the PNBA, but that they are ecologically and structurally different, and that they are subject to threats that differ between species depending on their biology. A major concern for this vast protected national park is that the main threats to seagrass habitats are not local in origin and cannot therefore be easily managed and avoided by the management authorities. Conservation of seagrass habitat by the Mauritanian authorities is a priority, but local action cannot counteract global pressures, particularly climate change and invasive species.
- Seaweed extracts: an eco-friendly approach to mitigate amyloodinium ocellatum parasite of marine fishPublication . Ferreira, Bruno Miguel Santos; Modesto, Teresa; Quintã, RaquelThe ectoparasite Amyloodinium ocellatum poses a significant threat to both brackish and marine warmwater aquaculture fishes, causing severe morbidity and mortality. Current treatments for amyloodiniosis are limited and environmentally unfriendly. Seaweed extracts, known for their antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties, offer a promising direction for addressing this gap. This research was dedicated to investigating the effects of six aqueous extracts from seaweed species, Asparagopsis armata gametophyte, Asparagopsis sp. tetrasporophyte, Sphaerococcus coronopifolius, Gracilaria sp., Halopteris scoparia, and Ulva sp., in delaying the development and/or mortality rates of two life stages of A. ocellatum, the tomonts and the dinospores. The study utilized a controlled in vitro environment, where each seaweed extract was subjected to various dilutions (1:1, 1:5, 1:10, 1:25, 1:50, and 1:100), along with a control treatment using autoclaved seawater. The inactivation rates of tomonts were monitored over 96 hours, while dinospore mortality rates were observed over 6 hours. The results revealed that none of the extract treatments achieved complete inactivation of tomonts, instead they temporarily inhibited their activity. Notably, the extract from the red seaweed A. armata gametophyte displayed the highest effectiveness, with inactivity rates reaching 99% at 24 hours and 48% at 96 hours. Similarly, no seaweed extract consistently induced significant higher mortalities in dinospores when compared to the control group, which exhibited substantial mortality rates. Overall, this study shows the promising outcomes achieved, particularly with the A. armata gametophyte extract in tomont inactivation. Besides, optimized outcomes might be expected by utilizing an optimized approach for the methodology of the dinospores trials.
- O contributo do enoturismo para a sustentabilidade do Algarve enquanto destino turístico de sol e marPublication . Costa, João Daniel Dias; Serra, Manuel António Dionísio; António, NunoObjectives: Wine tourism is a growing tourism modality, in line with contemporary tourism trends, which increasingly value the experience. It plays a fundamental role in wine-growing regions, promoting local gastronomy, preserving cultural heritage and contributing positively to the local economy. Thus, given the recognized potential of this activity, this study seeks to analyze how wine tourism contributes to the sustainability of the Algarve, a sun and sea tourist destination, through the existence of a positive link between this type of tourism and sustainability objectives. approved by the United Nations in 2015, within the scope of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Methodology: This work considers a qualitative approach, centered on interviews with economic agents active in wine tourism activities in the Algarve, with the aim of obtaining their perceptions regarding the impact of wine tourism on the region's tourist sustainability. The interviews were subjected to the text mining technique, using the VOSviewer software to identify keywords and patterns in the data collected. Findings: The study revealed a positive relationship between wine tourism and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The interviews carried out highlight that wine tourism contributes to achieving SDGs 8, 11, 12 and 17, promoting sustainable economic growth, the development of inland regions, the generation of employment and the diversification of tourist activities throughout the year, in line with the state of the art. Originality: The study contributes new knowledge by analyzing the relationship between wine tourism and the SDGs in the Algarve wine context. It offers a new perspective, by using the SDGs as a framework to understand the benefits of wine tourism, and can be valuable, both for economic agents in the wine tourism sector, and for those looking for a sustainable approach in other economic activities in regions less explored by tourism, as well as for specialists in the field, researchers and academics interested in the topic.
- Gestão administrativa e estratégica de recursos humanos no grupo Details Hotels & Resorts: métodos de recrutamento e seleçãoPublication . Pais, Sofia Marques; Henriques, Henrique; Semedo, Ana Suzete DiasO presente relatório de estágio demonstra o decorrer do estágio curricular realizado no Grupo Details Hotels & Resorts, no departamento de Recursos Humanos, de vinte de outubro de 2022 a sete de março de 2023, com a duração de oitocentas horas. O documento pretende descrever detalhadamente todas as atividades realizadas no decorrer do estágio refletindo sobre as aprendizagens daí decorrentes. O relatório está dividido em seis capítulos, iniciando-se com a caracterização da empresa, enquadramento teórico/revisão de literatura, passando pelas atividades e tarefas desempenhadas, assim como os resultados e a reflexão crítica do estágio.
- Factors shaping spectators’ consumption patterns: controversial arisings from an international sport tourism eventPublication . Mascarenhas, Margarida; Vieira, Henrique; Martins, RutePurpose – Sport events’ contribution to the destinations’ local economy implies in-depth knowledge of the economic benefits generated by non-resident spectators (NRS). Thus, this study aims to answer: What is the profile and shaping factors of the consumption patterns of the several types of NRS in international surf tourism events? Design/methodology/approach – A total of 263 questionnaires applied to the NRS of an international surf event were collected and analysed. The identification of the NRS profile and the predictive factors of their total expenditure were performed through the correlation of factors and multiple linear regression, respectively. Findings – Mostly, the event attracted generation Y NRS, with a high level of education and regular sport practice. The results showed differences among the NRS: the ‘‘casuals’’ included more women than men; the ‘‘extensioners’’ integrated the NRS whose surfing practice is higher; the ‘‘event visitors’’/’’time switchers’’ mostly integrated the domestic tourism flows; the ‘‘casuals’’ and ‘‘extensioners’’ spent the most at the destination, and those whose intention to recommend/revisit the destination, respectively, was higher; and the shaping factor that most influenced the increase in NRS expenditure was the overnight stay, added by older age, higher education level and foreign origin. Originality/value – Regardless of the initial motivation that led to the trip to the destination, the results verified that the event’s attributes are capable of contributing to the recommendation/visitation of the destination. Consequently, the study of economic benefits (tangible and intangible) provided by sport events in destinations should be guided by an integrative analysis of NRS.
- Plano de marketing para o centro de artes e ofícios de AlbufeiraPublication . Gomes, Anabela Gonçalves Guerreiro; Machado, Carla Sofia GuerreiroO Centro de Artes e Ofícios de Albufeira trata-se de um equipamento público pertencente à Câmara Municipal de Albufeira destinado a atividades de divulgação de artes, técnicas, saberes e produtos artesanais e integra uma componente informativa, formativa e expositiva. Em abril de 2023, foi inaugurado o Centro de Artes e Ofícios instalado no edifício do antigo Tribunal de Albufeira e localizado no centro histórico. O edifício foi reabilitado na sequência da candidatura da entidade pública a fundos europeus, no âmbito da necessidade de preservar a identidade e valorizar o património arqueológico e histórico da cidade. O objetivo deste projeto é desenvolver e implementar um plano de Marketing para a dar a conhecer o novo equipamento municipal e as suas valências. Numa primeira parte do trabalho, a metodologia utilizada é a pesquisa bibliográfica e revisão de literatura sobre artes e ofícios tradicionais, marketing e mais especificamente o marketing de serviços e no setor público, assim como planos de marketing e a sua implementação. Tendo em conta o objetivo do projeto, a segunda parte, mais prática, centra-se no desenvolvimento do plano de marketing composto por diversas etapas, desde a análise da envolvente externa e interna, à definição da estratégia e dos objetivos de marketing até à avaliação e controlo. Pretende-se que o plano de marketing contribua para o sucesso e rentabilidade do Centro de Artes e Ofícios de Albufeira e que este se torne numa referência na região algarvia para as artes e ofícios em termos de revitalização, valorização e dinamização dessas áreas tradicionais, através de serviços direcionados à população local e aos visitantes.
