- Citizen science as a monitoring tool in aquatic ecology: trends, gaps, and future perspectivesPublication . Lameira, Helton Luis Nina; Guerrero-Moreno, Mayerly Alexandra; Silva, Everton Cruz da; Oliveira, Fernando Abreu; Teodosio, Maria; Dias-Silva, Karina; Moura, James Ferreira; Juen, Leandro; Oliveira-Junior, José Max BarbosaAquatic ecosystems are essential for biodiversity and ecosystem services, but anthropogenic pressures threaten them. In this context, citizen science has emerged as an innovative strategy for biodiversity conservation and environmental monitoring. We conducted a scientometric analysis to identify patterns and gaps in the scientific literature on citizen science in aquatic ecology. We analyzed 185 articles published between 2003 and 2024 on the Web of Science and Scopus databases, with the highest number of publications on the topic (15.14%) in 2023. The United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom were the most productive and frequently studied countries. Studies focused on marine ecosystems (50.28%), while freshwater environments, such as rivers (12.99%), remain under-represented. Taxonomic groups such as fish (30.64%) and aquatic mammals (13.87%) were most commonly studied. The focus of monitoring was on ecology and species conservation. The projects adopted a contributory model of citizen engagement (92.97%), with a predominance of urban citizens (60.51%). Participants were trained through online platforms (25.75%) and in-person courses (21.56%), while communication methods involved sharing photos and videos (38.77%) and online uploads (23.79%). Therefore, expanding studies on freshwater ecosystems and rural and traditional communities, and integrating different levels of citizen participation, is essential.
- Methylation status of the telomerase reverse transcriptase promoter in parotid tumours and adjacent parotid gland tissue: a pilot study on the implications for recurrence and development of malignancyPublication . Paiva Correia, Antonio; Apolónio, Joana; Nadal, Alfons; Brandão, José Ricardo; Silva, Nádia; Machado, Bianca; Archilla, Ivan; Castelo-Branco, Pedro; Hellquist, HenrikBackground/Objectives: The methylation of the hypermethylated oncological region (THOR) of human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) may forecast tumour aggressiveness. This pilot study aimed to evaluate THOR methylation as a potential biomarker for recurrence/malignant transformation in salivary gland pleomorphic adenomas (PA). Methods: THOR methylation was assessed by quantitative pyrosequencing in 96 parotid tissue samples (benign and malignant), including non-neoplastic parotid tissue, PA, recurrent PA (rPA), and carcinomas, along with their adjacent tissues. TERT promoter mutations (TPMs) were analysed by Sanger sequencing. Results: THOR methylation significantly differed across the seven groups. Malignant tissues showed higher THOR methylation than non-neoplastic tissues, whereas benign tumours showed no significant difference from non-neoplastic tissue. THOR methylation in rPA was closer to carcinoma than to normal tissue, similar in rPA and tissues adjacent to rPA, and higher in tissues adjacent to carcinomas than in non-neoplastic tissues. A subset of PA-adjacent tissues showed epigenetic alterations, suggesting an increased risk of recurrence or malignant transformation (5–15%). No TPMs were detected. Conclusions: THOR methylation may add information to differentiate normal from carcinogenic tissues and, as such, may be included in a biomarkers panel. Epigenetic alterations in PA-adjacent tissues with normal histology highlight the need for improved diagnostic markers.
- Meaningful experiences in a tourism context: Conceptualising and testing a psychological frameworkPublication . Marques Câmara, Ester do Carmo; Pocinho, Margarida Maria Ferreira Diogo Dias; Agapito, Dora Lúcia Miguel; Jesus, Saúl Neves deTourism experiences are multidimensional and subjective, encompassing individuals' sensations, expectations, and needs. In this context, psychology and tourism are a successful partnership to develop meaningful experiences considering tourists’ needs, desires, and expectations. This interconnection is observed through applying positive psychology in the context of meaningful tourist experiences. This approach comprises adequate indicators to explore the tourism field from the perspective of individuals’ well-being. This investigation analyses and explores the concept of meaningful tourism experiences and their antecedents and outcomes. Specifically, it was intended to obtain a psychological framework on the motivations that lead individuals to choose determined places, considering their initial expectations on how that place can fulfil determined requirements, according to one’s characteristics, and the outcomes associated with the meaning attached to the experience, in terms on tourists’ well-being, satisfaction with life, and subjective happiness. Seven complementary studies were undertaken to fulfil these objectives, each assigned to a different document chapter. The results evidence the holistic character of meaningful experiences in tourism in terms of personal, emotional, well-being, relational and behavioural dimensions that enable a better conceptualisation of the construct. Additionally, the emergence of six domains associated with the attribution of meaning to the tourist experience has given a different perspective on the motivations associated with the thriven of meaning: a) self-care; b) nature and disconnect; c) refreshment and rest associated with meditation and mindfulness; d) learning about well-being; e) meaning and its roots; f) emotional intensity and its development. Finally, the results highlight a strong between the motivations associated with the meaning attached to the experience and the psychological outcomes of well-being (positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment), satisfaction with life (the degree to which individuals feel satisfied with their life characteristics after getting through a meaningful tourism experience), and subjective happiness (feelings of joy, pleasure, and excitement after the experience took place).
