- Correction: Child-mother relationships and childhood dietary patterns in the Iberian Peninsula uncovered by Bayesian isotopic approachesPublication . Toso, Alice; Casimiro, Silvia; Oxborough, Charlotte; Schifano, Simona; García-Collado, Maite I.; Cardoso, Francisca Alves; Soares, Joaquina; Valente, Maria João; Santos, Raquel; Filipe, Vanessa; Gonçalves, Maria José da Silva; Neto, Nuno; Rebelo, Paulo; Silva, Rodrigo Banha da; Filipe, Anabela Novais de Castro; Alexander, MichelleThis study examines trends in infant diet, breastfeeding and weaning in Portugal through time in Roman, Medieval Muslim and Christian skeletal assemblages (1st to the 15th century CE). New stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) measurements were collected from 143 non-adults and 46 adults that are analysed alongside comparative published datasets from contemporaneous Iberian populations. A statistical package was used to model bone collagen nitrogen isotope data of individuals, quantitatively estimating weaning onset and completion across diverse historical sites. Nutritional intake from infancy to adolescence was reconstructed via Bayesian modelling supported by the OsteoBioR platform using incremental dentine-collagen isotope ratio analysis in six adult individuals. Childhood diets in historical Portugal showed a prolonged weaning time while weaning food included varying degrees of high trophic level protein during both the Roman and Medieval periods. The Bayesian statistical approach offers a comprehensive perspective on child-rearing practices through the lens of diet, including breastfeeding, weaning and nutritional intake during childhood in historical Portugal. The results highlight the variability and complexity of childhood diets over time and between different locations. Overall, the study informs debates about child nutrition practices globally while also offering unique insights into infant nutrition in Iberia over nearly 1500 years.
- The role of virtual experiences in shaping tourists: perceptions of the destination: an exploration of metaverse in the context of tourismPublication . Omotunde, Mosunmola Labake; Campos, Ana CláudiaThis dissertation examines Metaverse influence on tourists' perceptions of destinations and its potential to transform the tourism industry. The main goal is to explore the role of Metaverse in shaping tourist experiences, destination marketing, and sustainability practices through immersive and interactive virtual environments. This will be done by conducting a systematic literature review (SLR) to 68 peer-reviewed articles from Scopus database, focusing on themes such as user engagement, technological adoption, and sustainability. The results of the review allow for a characterization of Metaverse as a powerful tool for enhancing tourist engagement through immersive and interactive experiences, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional tourism by reducing physical travel and environmental impact. However, the study’s findings indicate that challenges, such as technological accessibility, ethical concerns, and the digital divide hinder its widespread adoption. Conclusions reached led to the presentation of key recommendations for future research, including the need for cross-cultural studies, longitudinal analyses, and ethical governance to ensure the responsible and inclusive development of Metaverse tourism.
- Integrating co-creation into crowdfunding: a comprehensive model for internet users’ intention to participate in tourism projectsPublication . Laachach, Abderrahim; Sadighha, Jinous; Azza, YahyaThis study aims to develop and validate a comprehensive model that elucidates the factors influencing internet users’ intentions to participate in crowdfunding campaigns for tourism projects. This research utilized a quantitative methodology, collecting data from 385 participants through an online survey as well as through offline methods. The analysis was conducted using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLSSEM), enabling the examination of the proposed hypotheses and validation of the comprehensive model that identifies the factors affecting internet users’ intentions to engage in tourism crowdfunding projects. The results reveal that trust, perceived usefulness, perceived risk, communication quality, engagement, and social influences significantly predict internet users’ intentions to participate in crowdfunding tourism projects. Moreover, trust plays a crucial mediating role, mitigating the impact of perceived risk on participation. Additionally, crowdfunding platform ease of use only indirectly enhances users’ participation intention through trust. These findings underscore the importance of sharing transparent information about project’s potential risk and giving users access to secure crowdfunding processes to build trust towards the promotor and enhance users’ participation in tourism crowdfunding campaigns. This study advances the understanding of crowdfunding participation in the tourism sector by introducing a novel framework that integrates co-creation theory and social proof theory. The empirical validation of this comprehensive model offers valuable insights for practitioners and policymakers seeking to enhance the effectiveness of tourism crowdfunding campaigns.
- A systematic review of the current state of marine functional connectivity researchPublication . Tanner, Susanne E.; Sturrock, Anna M.; Öztürk, Rafet Ç.; Smoliński, Szymon; Terzi, Yahya; Reis-Santos, Patrick; Barboza, Francisco R.; Blanco, Andreu; Borsa, Philippe; Castilho, Rita; Costantini, Federica; Feyzioğlu, A. Muzaffer; Guizien, Katell; Guy-Haim, Tamar; Kaplan, David M.; Kotta, Jonne; Lett, Christophe; Martinho, Filipe; Nanninga, Gerrit B.; Pérez-Ruzafa, Angel; Rinkevich, Baruch; Walther, Benjamin D; Darnaude, Audrey M.Marine functional connectivity underpins biodiversity and ecosystem functions, en suring resilience in marine and land–sea interface ecosystems. Research on this topic has ad vanced rapidly in recent decades, as reflected in the growing body of primary literature and the increasing number of reviews covering a variety of topics and methodologies. Here, we systematically extracted and analysed information from 215 reviews across the entire field to synthesize the current state of marine functional connectivity research, highlighting the main topics, methods, taxa, geographic areas, and future research priorities. Word co-occurrence and network analyses revealed imbalances in review topics, with certain habitats (e.g. coral reefs), taxa (e.g. fish), and geo graphic areas (e.g. North Atlantic) receiving disproportionate attention. These disparities likely arise from variations in funding, field site accessibility, public interest, and/or delays in adopting new concepts and methodologies. Research priorities were broadly grouped into 2 themes: (1) ‘Methods’, highlighting the need to integrate and advance sampling, modelling, and ana lysis techniques, and (2) ‘Ecology and Application’, stressing the need to understand connectivity drivers, particularly the impacts of climate change, and to integrate connectivity knowledge into marine conservation and management. There was also a third overarching theme emphasizing the importance of expanding spatial and temporal coverage of connectivity knowledge and data by embracing new technologies, growing collaborative networks and targeting understudied habitats, areas, and taxa. Tackling the identified research priorities will further improve our ability to quantify connectivity patterns and drivers, and facilitate efforts to actively apply this knowledge and data in marine management and conservation.
- Technology enabled competitiveness and contributes to the wellness tourism customers’ satisfactionPublication . Ashqar, Rashed Isam; Ramos, CeliaWellness tourism has proliferated in recent years, only subject to a slowdown motivated by the pandemic period, in a society where the aim is more and more to preserve the body, the absence of illness, and solutions to alleviate mental and emotional problems. The current study aims to determine the elements in the technology environment that facilitate tourism activities that have a beneficial impact on wellness tourism consumers’ happiness and, in turn, their recommendations. Using the structural equations modelling, we conclude that the personalised messages sent through mobile devices, and activities associated with moments that lead to transcendence, escapism, relaxation, and trust in the hotel contribute to consumer satisfaction. Also, we infer that the hotel’s human resources services, trust, and consumer satisfaction contribute to consumer recommendations.
