- Transforming aquatic food systems through digital traceability: a review of global challenges and opportunitiesPublication . Costa, Gisela; Pita, Cristina; Ferreira Alexandre, Teresa Sofia; Roumbedakis, Katina; Pontes, João; Hübel, Michelle; Rangel, MafaldaAquatic foods are among the most extensively traded food commodities globally, with increasingly complex supply chains and rising consumer demand for sustainable, ethically sourced, and legally compliant products. In this context traceability systems have emerged as vital tools for enhancing transparency, accountability, and resilience within these supply chains. This study presents a systematic review of the literature to identify key challenges and opportunities associated with the implementation of digital traceability systems in aquatic food supply chains. The review synthesizes evidence on diverse technologies, governance frameworks, and supply chain dynamics. The findings reveal that while technological innovation, such as blockchain and digital traceability platforms, show promising solutions for improving data management and efficiency, and enhance consumer trust, several barriers persist. These include high implementation and maintenance costs, technological barriers (e.g., complexity of data management and usability), stakeholder disinterest, unequal access to digital infrastructure, gaps in international cooperation and regulatory frameworks, and issues of system interoperability. Conversely, traceability presents multiple benefits, including enhanced supply chain efficiency, market access, stronger stakeholder collaboration, and alignment with consumer preferences for sustainable products. It also contributes to combating Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, enhancing fair labour practices, and promoting compliance with international standards. We conclude that inclusive, context-specific approaches (tailored to the diverse characteristics of fisheries, aquaculture, and small-scale operations) and crosssector collaboration are essential to address the challenges inherent in globalized supply chains and realize the full potential of traceability systems in advancing more sustainable, transparent, and resilient aquatic food systems.
- Animal husbandry and hunting in the Roman vicus maritimus of Cerro da Vila (Southern Portugal): insights into the coastal economy of LusitaniaPublication . Pratas, Ana; Valente, Maria JoãoThis study presents a zooarchaeological analysis of the vertebrate faunal assemblage from the Roman vicus maritimus of Cerro da Vila, southern Lusitania (modern Algarve, Portugal), with occupation spanning the 1st to 5th centuries CE. The site functioned as a diversified coastal hub integrating intensive fish-processing, agricultural production, and maritime trade, yet the role of animal exploitation in sustaining this economy has hitherto remained poorly understood. Given the limited stratigraphic resolution of the excavation records, the assemblage was treated as a whole, and the patterns discussed reflect long-term, diachronic trends rather than discrete subperiod practices. The analysis reveals an assemblage dominated by domestic mammals, particularly swine and caprines (sheep and goats), whose age-at-death profiles and skeletal element distributions may be consistent with structured husbandry strategies oriented towards both primary meat production and the procurement of secondary products, notably wool and milk. The presence of chicken, red deer, and rabbit points to dietary diversity and to the complementary role of hunting within local subsistence practices, while biometric data fall within ranges documented for Roman-period assemblages elsewhere in southern Lusitania. The recovery of remains of Egyptian mongoose suggests the introduction of a non-native species, pointing to interprovincial exchange of biological material under Roman rule. Taken together, the faunal evidence indicates that Cerro da Vila combined livestock husbandry and marine resource exploitation while also participating in broader Mediterranean trade networks, thus shedding light on the economic organisation and interprovincial connectivity that characterised Roman coastal settlements in Lusitania.
- Spatiotemporal patterns, loads, and risks of microplastics in the stormwater system of a subtropical coastal cityPublication . Du, Aolei; Xu, Youxiang; Luo, Yutang; Jian, Qiying; Li, Yanjun; Zhan, Ziying; Qiu, Sizhe; Kam, Chon Wa; Chan, Tin-Chak; Huang, Tsz-Yin; Power, Deborah Mary; Zhang, KaiUrban stormwater runoff is a critical pathway for microplastics (MPs) to enter marine ecosystems, posing a significant threat. However, systematic studies on spatiotemporal patterns, loads, and risks of MPs in stormwater systems, particularly in subtropical coastal cities, remain limited. This study characterized MPs in Macao's stormwater drains across seasons, using density separation, H2O2 digestion, stereomicroscopy, and μ-FTIR analysis to investigate their abundance and distribution. MPs were ubiquitous across all sample sites, with abundance ranging from 0.86 to 53.03 n/L. Irregular shaped fragments (56.78 ± 0.13.80%) and the color black (38.44 ± 7.47%) were dominant, and the most common polymers were Polyethylene terephthalate (39.55 ± 16.63%), polypropylene (23.05 ± 18.15%), and polyethylene (9.52 ± 8.87%). While abundance of MPs was higher in the wet season, no significant seasonal variation was found. MP characteristics varied significantly with land use. The concentration range of MPs was estimated to be from 2.86 ± 0.38 to 3145.94 ± 766.74 μg/L, with an overall mean of 454.68 ± 572.20 μg/L through the mass concentration models. The daily MP emission load into the receiving water was estimated to range from 8.29 × 103 to 3.09 × 108 particles per day or 2.66 to 10,365.23 g/day. MP risk was high (Polymer Hazard Index/Potential Ecological Risk Index: III/V) due to hazardous polymers, with spatiotemporal variations further observed from fluctuating water flow erosion. Correlation analysis revealed that MP abundance showed a significant negative correlation with dissolved oxygen and a positive correlation with antecedent rainfall. These findings identify stormwater drains as a key MP conduit, influenced by rainfall and land use, calling for targeted management in urban coastal areas.

We sought to evaluate oncological outcomes by mismatch repair/microsatellite (MMR/MS) status in LARC patients treated with total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT). Methods: Patients from the International Real-World Study of TNT in Rectal Cancer tested for dMMR/MSI-H by immunohistochemistry and/or molecular testing were included. Pathological complete response (pCR), complete response (CR, pCR + clinical complete response), event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) were assessed by MMR/MS status in the overall and matched populations. For the latter, variable-ratio matching according to nine variables (age, year of diagnosis, tumour location, staging modality, cT stage, cN stage, presence of lateropelvic lymphadenopathy, distance from the mesorectal fascia, TNT regimen) was applied. Results: Of 1911 patients, 1320 (69.1%) (09/2012-09/2025) had information on the MMR/MS status, 46 (3.5%) having dMMR/MSI-H tumours. No outcome differences were found by MMR/MS status in the overall population. In the matched population (n = 372), pCR was 14.2% among patients with pMMR/MSS tumours versus 12.5% among those with dMMR/MSI-H tumours (adjusted OR 1.07, 95%CI 0.39-2.91, p = 0.899), while CR was 18.9% and 16.7%, respectively (adjusted OR 0.95, 95%CI 0.35-2.58, p = 0.917). 3-year EFS and 5-year OS were 65.8% and 79.2%, and 67.6% and 93.5% in patients with pMMR/MSS and in those with dMMR/MSI-H tumours, respectively (adjusted HR EFS 1.30, 95%CI 0.57-2.89, p = 0.527; adjusted HR OS 2.52, 95%CI 0.67-9.42, p = 0.171). Conclusions: In this study, the dMMR/MSI-H phenotype did not hold prognostic value in LARC patients treated with TNT.
- Coastline evolution, submerged landscape, and island occupation: preliminary insight on pleistocene-holocene coastal environments of south-eastern SicilyPublication . Ogloblin Ramirez, Isaac; Galili, Ehud; Tryon, Christian A.; Antonioli, Fabrizio; Zaia, Sara E.; Carroll, Peyton; Niespolo, Elizabeth M.; Gilmore, Lauren D.; Mauro, Sebastiano Di; Portella, Fabio; Minniti, Gianmarco; Monaco, Carmelo; Gonzalez, Nicholas Andrés; Insacco, Gianni; Patania, IlariaSicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean and the closest to mainland Europe, holds some of the earliest uncontroversial evidence in the region of sustained island occupation by humans, dating back to ~16.5 thousand years ago (ka). Using archival studies as well as dive-based and coastal fieldwork, this study provides initial insights into the diversity of submerged and coastal Pleistocene–Holocene landscapes off and on the coast of south-eastern Sicily. New archaeological and geomorphological data demonstrate the continued importance of Sicily in understanding early human uses of islands and nearshore resources well into the Pleistocene. With underwater and coastal archaeological surveys in the Siracusa and Ragusa areas, combined with innovative citizen science, and museum research, and sedimentary analysis, we have identified five key archives: 1) Pleistocene and Holocene archaeological and geological sea-level markers, confirming the quasi-stable tectonic conditions of the SE area of Sicily; 2) Coastal and partially submerged caves containing Middle and Late Pleistocene fauna and geomorphological features, re-identified after their 19th-century discovery, offering valuable data on faunal transitions and environmental changes; 3) Submerged caves and shoreline caverns (at 1 to 25 m water depth) that are possible deposits containing fauna and anthropogenic remains; 4) Submerged landscapes with clay-rich deposits that may represent paleosols or terrestrial Pleistocene-Holocene deposits, possibly associated with prehistoric human occupation of the island; and 5) Three concentrations of Pleistocene-Holocene flint materials (two reworked assemblages of anthropogenically modified flint artifacts in Ognina and Portopalo di Capo Passero —possibly dating to the Neolithic/Mesolithic period — and a concentration of unworked flint nodules at Punta delle Formiche representing an unrecognized natural source of raw material for tool manufacture). These archives provide new data on the island's carrying capacity, the diversity andavailability of coastal resources, and sea-level changes since the Last Glacial Maximum (26.5–19 cal ka BP).
- Cyclonic surface circulation in the northern coast of the Gulf of Cádiz: insights from Lagrangian drifters and high-resolution modelsPublication . Luján-Amoraga, Esther; Román-Cascón, Carlos; Jiménez Rincón, Juan Alberto; Izquierdo, Alfredo; Bruno, Miguel; Vázquez, Águeda; Relvas, Paulo; Garel, Erwan; Bolado-Penagos, MarinaThis study presents direct in situ observational evidence of a cyclonic circulation cell east of Cape Santa María (CSM), in the northern Gulf of Cádiz (GoC). Three Lagrangian drifters deployed in October 2022 revealed a coherent cyclonic circulation cell with a characteristic diameter of approximately 40-45 km, consistently estimated from drifter trajectories and relative vorticity. Their trajectories showed alternating eastward and westward flows, modulated by wind variability, bathymetry, and mesoscale dynamics. Satellite observations showed a cooler, chlorophyll-a enriched core, consistent with upwelling and retention of enriched surface water masses within the circulation cell. High-resolution WRF atmospheric simulations indicated alternating easterly and westerly wind regimes that were associated with reversals in coastal circulation. Westerly winds between 18th and 24th October produced positive Ekman pumping east of CSM, creating conditions favourable to the intensification of cyclonic circulation. The IBI ocean model reproduced the main structure of the circulation cell structure, including flow accelerations near the shelf edge, and indicated upward vertical motions within the cyclonic circulation cell. A Lagrangian particle experiment suggested that the cyclonic cell favours both retention and offshore export of surface waters, with residence times of up to approximately 16 days. Overall, this study highlights the role of interactions between atmospheric forcing, bathymetry, and mesoscale dynamics in controlling small-scale surface circulation in the GoC, and underscores the value of integrating drifter observations, satellite data, and numerical models to characterize coastal dynamics.
- It takes a village: how plant-associated bacterial communities socialise to shape plant growth and healthPublication . Escudero-Martínez, Carmen; Tkacz, Andrzej; Albareda Contreras, Marta; Sánchez-Cañizares, Carmen; Rachel WheatleyPlants outsource many functions to an associated microbiome, an ‘outside gut’ composed of socially interacting bacterial communities that support plant growth and health. These dynamic and diverse microbiomes span different plant microenvironments and form complex networks shaped by the environmental context and the plant’s genetics. While some microbes cause disease, many others contribute to essential functions, influencing plant fitness, survival, and ultimately soil health. Although the host genetics and abiotic factors structure these communities, the functional diversity and ecological roles of plant-associated bacteria are ultimately shaped by microbe–microbe interactions. These interactions also play a critical role in the successful colonisation of plant tissues. Beneficial members of these communities enhance plant nutrient uptake, modulate phytohormones to shape root architecture, or prime plant systemic immunity to repel pathogens. Deciphering how plant-associated bacterial communities assemble and interact, both with their host and with one another, is essential for uncovering the mechanisms that underpin bacterial social behaviours within the plant holobiont, such as quorum sensing, metabolite exchange, and contact-dependent interactions. Here we review several recent publications that shed new light on the social lives of plant-associated bacteria, with a particular focus on their competition mechanisms and strategies for colonisation and establishment. In this context, we highlight how the rational design of plant bioinoculants based on microbial consortia represents a powerful strategy for promoting sustainable agriculture in a rapidly changing environment.
