- Challenge for planning by using cluster methodology: the case study of the algarve regionPublication . Bienvenido-Huertas, David; Farinha, Fátima; Oliveira, Miguel José; Silva, Elisa Maria de Jesus da; Lança, RuiThis study analyses the most appropriate methodology to make similarity classifications among the cities of the Algarve (Portugal) according to 105 sustainability indicators monitored with the Observatory of Sustainability of the Algarve Region for Tourism (OBSERVE). The methodology used to establish the similarities was the cluster analysis with 4 di_erent approaches which reduced the dimensions of the data set: total approach, pillar approach, subject area approach, and indicator approach. By combining the approaches, a total of 620 di_erent cluster analyses were performed. The results reflected that the data analysis approaches with less dimensions were those that performed the best groups among cities. In this sense, the approaches with a high number of indicators (e.g., the total or the pillar approach) were characterised by misclassifying cities in more than 30% of the indicators. Thus, the most acceptable cluster analysis approach was that with a low number of indicators. Through this approach, it was possible to make correct groups of the sustainability level of the cities of the Algarve. These results provided an appropriate methodology for the decision-making regarding the sustainability of a region and could be extrapolated to other regions to assess sustainability or environmental indicators.
- Chemical and health risks of swimming pool maintenance workersPublication . Silva, Adriana; Pinto, Ezequiel; Braz, Nídia Maria Dias Azinheira RebeloSwimming pool maintenance workers are exposed to occupational hazards, as it involves the regular handling of toxic chemicals. The present study, still in the design phase, aims to describe the chemical and biological exposure of workers of a swimming pool maintenance company and to verify its compliance with the safety standards in force. A quantitative questionnaire will identify the use of personal protective equipment, chemical agents, and handling procedures, particularly regarding the time and frequency of use.
- Cognitive, affective and behavioural repercussions of perceived quality in tourism vocational education: insights from self-determination theoryPublication . Silva, Rejane Santana da; Quiroga Souki, Gustavo; Oliveira, Alessandro Silva de; Vieira, Luís Sérgio; Dionísio Serra, Manuel AntónioPurpose – This study aimed to investigate the influence of the perceived quality by students regarding their experiences in vocational schools in tourism, hospitality and food service on cognitive and affective responses (satisfaction, self-efficacy expectations and self-regulation strategies of motivation for learning - SRSML) and commitment (behavioural response). Design/methodology/approach – A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 454 students from twelve Turismo de Portugal IP-affiliated schools. The theoretical framework was rooted in Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and PLS-SEM, using ADANCO 2.3 software to test the proposed model. Findings – Perceived quality by students concerning their school experiences are socio-contextual factors that directly influence their satisfaction and self-efficacy expectations (cognitive and affective responses). Satisfaction and self-efficacy expectations positively affected SRSML. Finally, satisfaction and the SRSML positively impacted the students` commitment to schools (behavioural response). Originality/value – This study contributes to academia by comprehensively addressing 16 perceived quality dimensions within vocational education. It aligns with SDT, revealing that socio-contextual factors affect students’ cognitive, affective, and behavioural responses. Additionally, it demonstrates positive relationships between student satisfaction, self-efficacy expectations, SRSML, and students’ commitment to vocational education institutions. This study emphasises the multidimensional nature of perceived quality, urging educational institutions to address tangible and intangible dimensions to develop strategies to provide high-quality experiences, increasing students` satisfaction, self-efficacy expectations, motivation, and commitment.
- From destination attributes to tourist satisfaction: novelty-seeking as a bridge between liminality and place attachmentPublication . Lança, Milene; Nobre Pereira, Luis; Silva, joão; Andraz, Jorge; Cunha Sousa Nunes, Rui JoséThis study analyses how destination attributes influence tourist satisfaction via perceived quality, price, and safety, and how these relationships differ by novelty-seeking orientation. Framed at the intersection of liminality and place attachment, novelty-seeking is conceptualised as the behavioural mechanism linking extraordinary experiences to emotional bonds with place, offering the first empirical integration of these frameworks in tourism research. Using data from 1,488 tourists visiting the Algarve (Portugal) in 2022–2023 and Partial Least Squares Multigroup Analysis (PLS-MGA), the results show that for conservative tourists, destination attributes enhance perceived quality, lower perceived prices and safety concerns, and increase satisfaction. For adventurous tourists, satisfaction is driven mainly by perceived price and is negatively affected by in situ safety concerns, indicating that novelty-seekers do not uniformly discount risk. The findings highlight how novelty-seeking conditions cognitive pathways to satisfaction and inform market segmentation strategies aligned with distinct motivational orientations.
- Green HRM’s effect on employees’ eco-friendly behavior and green performance: a study in the portuguese tourism sectorPublication . Gomes, Daniel R.; Ribeiro, Neuza; Gomes, Gabriela; Ortega, Eduardo; Dias Semedo, Ana SuzeteAbstract: This study examines how Green Human Resource Management practices improve employees’ eco-friendly behavior and green performance, and the mediator effect of affective commitment in these relationships. Our sample included 449 employees, from different Portuguese tourism organizations. The results demonstrate that the implementation of Green Human Resource Management practices produces a positive effect on eco-friendly behavior, green performance, and affective commitment, with commitment mediating the mentioned relationship. Therefore, when organizations apply greener Human Resources Management, they might influence positively the attitudes and behaviors of their employees, improving their affective commitment and, consequently, their ecofriendly behaviors and green performance. This research is innovative as it integrates Green Human Resource Management, eco-friendly behavior, green performance, and affective commitment in a single research model, expanding the knowledge over these topics, and suggesting that organizations should establish Green Human Resource Management policies, especially those that strengthen employees’ affective attachment and improve their eco-friendly behavior as well as the organization’s green performance.
- Inclusive tourism: assessing the accessibility of Lisbon as a tourist destinationPublication . Rebelo, Sandra; Patuleia, Mafalda; Dias, ÁlvaroFull accessibility to people with reduced mobility, applied to tourism, is difficult to achieve and should not be seen in an absolute way, but as a concern to make tourism services more accessible and focused on the specific and individual needs of people as tourists. National and regional entities should adopt good practices to build a tourism of all, for all. The Delphi method was used in order to verify the accessibility and attractiveness of the city of Lisbon as a tourist destination by addressing the following objectives: to analyse the competitiveness of a destination for people with reduced mobility, to analyse if Lisbon is attractive and inclusive, considering its infrastructures, services, hospitality, tourist attractions and accessibility. The results obtained in the study show that Lisbon’s factors and resources are increasingly accessible to people with reduced mobility. Our findings reveal that entertainment, general and tourism infrastructures, accommodation, the various activities and cultural resources and the quality of services present greater accessibility for people with reduced mobility. The factors with less importance were: marketing of a destination, accessibilities, and natural resources.
- Industrial vernacular heritage and tourism – tide mills in Faro, PortugalPublication . Marçal Gonçalves, MartaFaro being a seaside city, the tide mills are part of its rich heritage. Located on the shores of the Ria Formosa, between mainland and sea, these mills have a potential tourist and cultural interest that is still unexploited. Taking part in the predominantly Mediterranean climate of Faro, along with tourism being one of the major engines of the region’s economy, proposals to create pedestrian routes are generally welcome. Thus, the objective of this article is to draw attention to a type of heritage that is at high risk of disappearing, developing a pedestrian path in the city of Faro, so that by integrating this heritage into a tourism and sustainable activity, it can be protected and disclosed. This research was based on bibliographic, webgraphic and field surveys. Throughout the development of the research for this work, the locations of several tide mills were identified, most of them in ruins, some disappeared completely only knowing their approximate location, or their function was changed, making use, in this case, of the existing infrastructures. In the Algarve, the region of which Faro is the capital, and in the city itself, the vernacular heritage is systematically ignored, either by ignorance or, for being a "minor" heritage, it is simply insignificant to the eyes of experts and to the general population, who do little to protect it. However, tide mills are part of the collective memory of the region and the city of Faro in particular, so it is important to draw attention to these heritage elements and, in this case, tourism can be a driving force.
- The influence of a 12-week yoga program on military aviation pilots' decision-making capacity for operational effectivenessPublication . Santos, Sara; Fernandes, Orlando; Cabo, Carolina A.; Parraca, José A.; Melo, FilipeMilitary aviation demands cognitive performance, emotional stability, and resilience under pressure. Portuguese Airforce pilots face additional challenges: maintaining fitness and readiness independently, without structured exercise regimens. Yoga’s capacity to enhance mindfulness makes it a promising intervention. Despite potential benefits, research on yoga’s impact in military aviation remains limited. This study investigates incorporation of yoga into the training regimen of Portuguese Airforce to verify decision-making effectiveness and performance. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 18 Portuguese Air Force pilots: Control Group (n = 8) followed standard military training, and Intervention Group (n = 10) received aditional yoga training twice a week, for 12 weeks. Assessments included Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA), Aviation Safety Attitude Scale (ASAS), Risk Perception To Self (RPTS), Trail Making Test (TMT) and aviation simulator performance. Data analysis used Jamovi v2.6.13. The yoga group showed significant improvements in mindfulness (FFMQ), interoceptive awareness (MAIA), self-confidence and safety attitudes (ASAS), cognitive flexibility (TMT-B), and simulator performance (fewer flight errors). Enhancements in attention regulation, body awareness, and emotional self-regulation reflect greater readiness for stress management. Improvements in decision-making, calculated risk-taking, and operational safety suggest yoga’s potential to reinforce psychophysiological resilience in high-demand environments. Yoga contributes meaningfully to enhanced performance and safety in high-pressure aviation environments. These findings may inform policy-level decisions toward integrating mandatory mind-body training programs that are cost-effective and time-efficient. The benefits observed may be applicable to Air Force teams globally, as well as commercial aviation, civil aviation, and other high-stress, high-performance domains, including elite sports. Clinical Trial Registry number and website where it was obtained: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT05821270.
