  • Examining Airbnb guest satisfaction tendencies: a text mining approach
Publication . Cavique, Mariana; Ribeiro, Ricardo; Batista, Fernando; Correia, Antónia
Given Airbnb's changes since its inception and the dynamism of customer preferences, a study that sheds light on how customer satisfaction is evolving is relevant. An automated method is proposed for identifying these satisfaction tendencies at a large scale. This study follows a text mining approach to analyse 590,070 reviews posted between 2010 and 2019 on the Airbnb platform in Lisbon. Topic Modelling is employed in order to identify the main topics discussed in the reviews, and Sentiment Analysis to understand the topics that compose guest's satisfaction in the context of Airbnb services. Three major topics are extracted from Airbnb reviews: 'host's service', 'physical aspects', and 'location'. Although a positivity bias in guest reviews is confirmed, the satisfaction level seems to be decreasing over the years. The results also reveal that 'physical aspects' is the predominant topic when considering the negative guest reviews. This research considers big data the base to create knowledge, data spanning over the years, offering consistency to the research.
  • Modelling wine tourism experiences
Publication . Madeira, Arlindo; Correia, Antónia; Filipe, Jose Antonio
Wine experiences contributed to attracting tourists to the destinations, in particular in Portugal where wine is worldwide renowned. This research aims to understand what drives tourists to visit a destination to live a wine experience and how this experience may improve the image and retain tourists. This model conceptual in its essence was applied in an emergent wine region in Portugal - Lisbon. Data were collected in 16 wineries from a random sample of 314 visitors in an emergent wine region, and structural equation modelling (SEM) was applied. Structural equation modelling was used to test hypotheses and validate the conceptual model. Results show that motivation positively influences the wine experiences, which in turn is explained by the dimensions presented in the study. Furthermore, the wine experience influences image and satisfaction positively and the brand equity negatively. From the managerial perspective, implications are discussed as well as the main limitations, and then suggestions for further research are provided.
  • Gastronomy experiential traits and their effects on intentions for recommendation: a fuzzy set approach
Publication . Correia, Antónia; Kim, Seongseop (Sam); Kozak, Metin
Local food is a motivation that drives international tourists to visit a certain destination and to enrich their experiential quality. Although considerable effort has been exerted in investigating the relationship between the importance of local food and satisfaction and future intentions, no study has explored gastronomical experience by using fuzzy set analysis. The present study aims to explore the influence of local food attributes on customer satisfaction and intentions to recommend through a fuzzy set analysis. This study uses empirical data from 1,376 international tourists visiting Hong Kong. Findings suggest that the attributes of local food and their influence on the intentions to recommend vary in accordance with the type of restaurants operating in Hong Kong. The results of this study shed practical implications, such as the development of different symbolic meanings of gastronomy and service for international diners at different restaurants.
  • The propensity to bargain while on a vacation
Publication . Kozak, Metin; Correia, Antónia; Chiappa, Giacomo Del
This article assesses how tourists' bargaining motivations and attitudes moderate their willingness to return to Italy, where bargaining is perceived as one of the best ways to deal with sellers. A non-probability quota sampling technique was used to survey domestic tourists in Italy through an online questionnaire which encompassed 26 bargaining values and one item to measure the likelihood that the tourists would bargain at the same destination in the future. The data comprised a total of 812 observations. An order probit model and marginal effects were estimated to measure the tourists' propensity to return to Italy for bargaining purposes. The study findings indicate that tourists' propensity to return for bargaining purposes is taken with the awareness that they will not obtain what they expected; as a matter of fact, they are unlikely to care about the final result but instead engage in this behaviour to have fun.
  • Places and tourists: ties that reinforce behavioural intentions
Publication . Silva, Ricardo; Correia, Antónia
This study examines the tourist/destination relationship, in particular the emotional dimension of this relationship via the place attachment construct, in the Alentejo region. A model in which the affective component (satisfaction, trust, place attachment and commitment) plays a role between the cognitive and conative component (behavioural intentions) was proposed. The model was empirically tested with a convenience sample of 814 tourists. A structural equation model (SEM) was applied using AMOS 21. The results suggest that the emotional relationship between tourists and destinations plays an important role in behavioural intentions with place attachment being critical to enhance this relation. At the managerial level, these results suggest that strengthening emotions and attachment is a must to retain tourists and is one of the main issues in tourism destination marketing.
  • Steady tourists' relationship with a mature destination: the case of Portugal
Publication . Correia, Antónia; Serra, Jaime; Artal-Tur, Andres
This article assesses how the last-visit features and the socio-demographic profile of tourists moderate repeat-visit patterns to Portugal, a mature destination where the persistence of loyal visitors has made its mark on tourism development. The methodology used is a survival analysis to assess the tourists' repeat patterns. To test the model, a database of 4612 observations was employed, which was obtained from a survey of international tourists. Only repeat visitors with more than two visits over the years were considered for the purpose of the research. The study finds that a combination of socio-demographic characteristics, expectation/satisfaction, trip purpose, pull motivations and regional destination has a positive effect on repeat patterns, confirming that tourists' willingness to repeat visits to Portugal is far from ceasing. Based on those tourists to Portugal who declared when they started to visit the country, and the number of years of their repeat visits, the article contributes to the literature by introducing new methods of assessing tourists' repeat patterns for destinations.
