Resumo(s)

There are 34 golf courses operating in Algarve, representing 42% of the country’s courses. This number promises to grow substantially. If all projects under evaluation get approved, there could be up to 88 golf courses by 2020. The aim of this project is to assess the benefits of the adoption and certification of Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) in Algarve´s golf courses. Data were collected from questionnaires to the total 34 Algarve´s golf courses and interviews to the representatives of 19 of those courses. The results indicate that 14 golf courses have adopted EMS, of which 6 (18%) of them are certified through ISO 14001; 4 are TUV Eco-Golf certified (12%), and 4 opted not to get certified. Of these 14 courses, seven are also Green Globe 21 certified, and only one (3%) is Audubon International certified, making a total of 15 golf courses with EMSs implemented and 11 got certified in the a region. The main benefits of the EMSs adoption and certification by the golf courses are: assessment of environmental aspects and impacts and existence of monitoring records of internal environmental indicators; improved public image of the organization; rationalization of water consumptions and energy; improvement in the management of waste and wastewater; reduction in the usage of fertilizers and other chemicals, definition of environmental objectives and targets; and employee training and awareness. There is a set of EMSs norms and environmental certification programs that apply to golf courses, which can improve the environmental performance of organizations, with proved benefits in terms of economic and organizational management, demonstrated in fifteen golf courses in the region. Even though the costs of implementating an EMSs are significant, but hard to quantify, there is an expected return in the long term.
