The present e-book is a product of PROPS – Interactive Narratives Propose Pluralistic Discourse (2023-2024), a project that acted on the prevention and education for the media, addressing online hate speech, specifically in the context of online video games. The project focused on developing a new approach to online hate speech through the creation of interactive counter-narratives, that can motivate and engage educators, trainers, children, and young people to take an active role in containing this phenomenon. PROPS (slang for proper respect [due respect]) began with a comprehensive review of the existing literature on the topics of (online) hate speech, video games and interactive narratives as pedagogical tools. Following this, surveys and focus groups were conducted with students aged 10-18, in order to gather pertinent firsthand insights and experiences. The collected data from these activities was instrumental for creating six interactive narratives, designed as educational resources aimed at fostering reflection and discussion about the issue of online hate speech and its prevention in pedagogical settings. The project was developed by the Research Center for Arts and Communication (CIAC, University of Algarve) in partnership with Santarém Polytechnic University, University of Beira Interior and Universidade Aberta (UAb). The essays included in this collection present some of the key findings from the project, shedding light on the relevant insights that were gained and on the interactive educational tools that were developed to address and mitigate online hate speech among young people.eng
