Abstract(s)
(Arsawan, I. et al., 2021; Ming-Horng, W. and Chieh-yu, L., 2011; Yu, W., and Ramanathan, R. 2017; Gupta, H. and Barua, M., 2018) A região do Algarve, dada a sua singularidade geográfica, económica e cultural, desempenha um papel relevante no contexto nacional.
utilizadas no estudo nacional.
This dissertation aims to analyze the alignment of companies in the Algarve region with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the Agenda 2030, as well as to deepen the understanding of the meaning and relevance of these objectives within the broader business and socio-political context. The research seeks to assess the degree of adherence and commitment of Algarve companies to sustainability, using the fundamental principles of the Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) Portugal and the Jornada 2030 as references, as highlighted in the report "Maturity of Companies in Sustainability - Aggregate Portrait 2022” (BCSD 2022). SMEs play a significant role in industrial environmental impact, constrained by financial, strategic, and technological limitations, as well as low network integration and external support. Assessing their sustainability maturity is therefore essential to identifying challenges and promoting sustainable practices (Arsawan, I. et al., 2021; Ming-Horng, W. and Chieh-yu, L., 2011; Yu, W., and Ramanathan, R. 2017; Gupta, H. and Barua, M., 2018). Given its geographical, economic, and cultural uniqueness, the Algarve region plays a relevant role in the national context. However, this region has not yet been analyzed in the BCSD Portugal study. Therefore, this dissertation proposes a comprehensive exploratory analysis of the maturity of Algarve companies concerning sustainability, applying methodologies similar to those used in the national study. To achieve this goal, this research establishes a series of specific steps: 1. Identification of private companies in the Algarve and sample selection. 2. Construction and application of a questionnaire survey adapted from the BCSD Portugal questionnaire to the selected companies. 3. Treatment and analysis of the collected data, using the transformation of dichotomous variables into means and percentages, and applying comparison charts. 4. Critical evaluation of the maturity of Algarve companies in terms of sustainability and their relation to the global goals of the Jornada 2030. 5. Comparison of the results obtained with those in the report "Maturity of Companies in Sustainability - Aggregate Portrait 2022, BCSD Portugal” and the goals set by the Jornada 2030. This analysis aims to fill a knowledge gap regarding corporate sustainability in the Algarve and contribute to the development of strategies and policies that will facilitate achieving the SDGs established in the 2030 Agenda. This, in turn, will enable a more sustainable future for the region and, consequently, for the country.
