Abstract(s)
The Lusitanian toadfish, Halobatraclzus didactylus, is an eastern Atlantic marine teleost member of the family Batrachoididae. It is a sedentary benthic species that inhabits shallow waters and lives partly buried or concealed in rock crevices which are used as shelters and nesting sites. During the breeding season the Lusitanian toadfish produces sounds with the swimbladder which are thought to be mating and/ or agonistic calls. ln the present study the seasonal reproductive cycle of H. drkiacijvlos from the coastal lagoon Ria Formosa (south of Portugal) was determined by analysing the gonadal development and the changes in sex steroids throughout gametogenesis as well as seasonal alterations of secondary sexual characteristics. This species reproduces once a year during late spring-early summer. Females have group synchronous oocytes, which grow from November until June-July when they are released probably as a single batch.
