B.; Couto, C.The technologies used in greenhouse production systems have developed considerably during the last decade. These improvements have taken place in several areas, such as the development of new building techniques and actuating equipments, modelling of the plant physiological processes and of the greenhouse climate, among many others. Nowadays, due to economic and environmental requirements, there is still a demand to improve the greenhouse climate management and control systems in order to optimise the production process. This paper addresses some of the software tools that are being implemented and tested with this purpose.

The controller outputs are computed in order to optimise the future behaviour of the greenhouse environment, concerning the set-point accuracy and the minimization of energy inputs.

The experiments showed that the second order models identified for the air temperature and humidity achieve a close agreement between simulated and experimantal data.

The structure and the parameters of the climate discrete-time dynamic model were previously identified using data acquired during two different periods of the year. Several experiments showed that the second-order models identified achieve a close agreement between simulated and experimental data. Later, it was found that parameters change with varying operational conditions. Thus, for an efficient use of these models in real-time control, a recu~ive identification technique was implemented for the estimation of the parameters.
