- Portuguese fisheries in seamounts of Madeira-Tore (NE Atlantic)Publication . The main objective is to identify the different fisheries taking place in the area, characterize the spatial patterns of vessels activity and estimate the fishing intensity, thus contributing to better inform management decisions. Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) and e-logbook data for the period 2012–2014 were used. The combined analysis of these data allowed the identification of fishing events and the estimation of the fishing intensity by gear type, as well as the characterization of general patterns relating to fishing operations. A total of 47 vessels displayed fishing activity in the studied area, mainly longliners based either on the mainland or the Madeira archipelago, visiting different seamounts in fishing trips lasting two to three weeks, and a few pole and line bait boats. Bottom and pelagic longlining alternate throughout the year, the former mostly in spring and summer, targeting the wreckfish Polyprion americanus and the European conger, Conger conger, while the latter is carried out in autumn and winter using a surface longline targeting the swordfish Xiphias gladius and a drifting longline set deeper in the water column, targeting the black scabbard fish Aphanopus carbo. A global evaluation of the fishing intensity and estimation of fishing impact in this area calls for the availability of VMS data, elogbooks and landing declarations from non-Portuguese fleets, making monitoring in these areas a top priority to assess the sustainability of human activities.
- Sea-level rise and anthropogenic activities recorded in the late Pleistocene/Holocene sedimentary infill of the Guadiana Estuary (SW Iberia)Publication . Delgado, J.; Boski, T.; Nieto, J. BP (13 kyr) as recorded in the estuarine sediments of the Guadiana River (SE Portugal, SW Spain). We combined new data from a 63 m-long borehole, drilled through the entire postglacial sedimentary sequence, with information on five previously studied cores. By integrating sedimentological, geochemical and palaeontological proxies, we were able to make a palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the Guadiana terminal palaeovalley during the last 13 kyr and propose a curve of sea-level rise for the SW Iberian Atlantic margin. Our foraminifera-based palaeoecological reconstruction, anchored to a 14C age model, reveals rapid sea-level rise from 13 kyr, interrupted during the Younger Dryas and resuming ca 11.5 kyr. The pace of marine transgression slackened ca. 7.5 kyr and since then has progressed upwards at a rate of 1.2 mm yr 1. HoloceneeAnthropocene sediments from two boreholes were also analysed to assess the timing, levels and sources of trace metals produced by acid mine drainage from the Iberian Pyrite Belt. Study of metal/aluminium ratios through the profiles allowed background metal concentrations to be estimated from lithostratigraphic units older than ca. 5 kyr (i.e. unaffected by anthropogenic activities). Human activities are especially evident from 4.5 kyr (the beginning of the Copper Age), with anthropogenic sources of metal fluxes prevailing over natural sources (especially Pb, Co, Ni, and Mn, and, to a lesser extent, Zn, Cu, and Ni). Mining activities became particularly intensive between the late Bronze Age and the Roman period (3e1.5 kyr), when the highest metal enrichment factors were recorded: EFPb z 2, EFCd > 10, EFCr z 2, EFCu z 3, EFZn ¼ 1.4.This study reveals the utility of postglacial sedimentary records for reconstructing historical changes in regional water-sediment quality and separating natural and anthropogenic sources of geochemical contaminants.
- Sex steroids of black scabbardfish, Aphanopus carbo, in relation to reproductive and migratory dynamicsPublication . Farias, I.; Couto, Elsa; Lagarto, N.; Delgado, J.; Canario, Adelino; Figueiredo, I.Black scabbardfish, Aphanopus carbo, is a commercially important species that takes distant migrations throughout its life cycle. Sex steroids were measured by radioimmunoassay in the blood plasma of specimens caught off the Madeira Archipelago and mainland Portugal to link this species migratory path with its reproductive cycle. Furthermore, a pilot study using Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) was designed to evaluate the effect of sample freshness on steroid levels because black scabbardfish blood was collected at separate times after specimens were caught. The changes in T and 11-KT concentrations between the time of blood extraction and the time after preservation did not statistically differ among the different methods applied. Therefore, measured black scabbardfish steroid concentrations were directly used in the subsequent data analyses. In females, E2 and in T concentrations peaked at a late stage of vitellogenesis. E2 concentration was significantly different between females caught off each area. Clustering E2 and T concentrations from all developing females resulted in the separation of two distinct groups, independently of their geographical area. In males, T and 11-KT were not significantly different between maturity stages. The hepatosomatic index of males caught off mainland Portugal was relatively high. This may reflect a mechanism for storing energy that will later be consumed during migration to the spawning grounds. The trend of sex steroids concentrations throughout the sexual maturation of the species is consistent with the morphological indicators and shows evidence of the reproductive and migratory pattern hypothesised for the black scabbardfish in NE Atlantic.
- Source and impact of lead contamination on δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity in several marine bivalve species along the Gulf of CadizPublication . J.; Nowell, G.; Bebianno, Maria JoãoCoastal areas and estuaries are particularly sensitive to metal contamination from anthropogenic sources and in the last few decades the study of space-time distribution and variation of metals has been extensively researched. The Gulf of Cadiz is no exception, with several rivers draining one of the largest concentrations of sulphide deposits in the world, the Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB). Of these rivers, the Guadiana, one of the most important in the Iberian Peninsula, together with smaller rivers like the Tinto and Odiel, delivers a very high metal load to the adjacent coastal areas. The purpose of this work was to study the source and impact of lead (Pb) drained from historical or active mining areas in the IPB on the activity of a Pb inhibited enzyme (δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase, ALAD) in several bivalve species along the Gulf of Cadiz. Seven marine species (Chamelea gallina, Mactra corallina, Donax trunculus, Cerastoderma edule, Mytilus galloprovincialis, Scrobicularia plana and Crassostrea angulata) were collected at 12 sites from Mazagón, near the mouth of the rivers Tinto and Odiel (Spain), to Cacela Velha (Ria Formosa lagoon system, Portugal). Lead concentrations, ALAD activity and lead isotope ratios ((206)Pb/(204)Pb, (207)Pb/(204)Pb and (208)Pb/(204)Pb) were determined in the whole soft tissues. The highest Pb concentrations were determined in S. plana (3.50±1.09 μg g(-1) Pb d.w.) and D. trunculus (1.95±0.10 μg g(-1) Pb d.w.), while M. galloprovincialis and C. angulata showed the lowest Pb levels (<0.38 μg g(-1) Pb d.w.). In general, ALAD activity is negatively correlated with total Pb concentration. However this relationship is species dependent (e.g. linear for C. gallina ALAD=-0.36[Pb]+0.79; r=0.837; or exponential for M. galloprovincialis ALAD=2.48e(-8.3[Pb]); r=0.911). This indicates that ALAD activity has considerable potential as a biomarker of Pb and moreover, in marine bivalve species with different feeding habits. Lead isotope data showed significant seasonal and spatial changes in bivalve isotopic composition reflecting seasonal and geographic differences in bioaccumulation. Within the study area, Pb can be modelled as a mixing between geogenic Pb and mine-related, discharges of Pb from the IPB. For some sites at the mouth of the Guadiana River, the bivalves show contamination from other anthropogenic sources, such as leaded boat/aviation fuel and/or leaded paint. Finally, the study demonstrates convincingly the need to consider species-specific variation when using bivalve ALAD activity as a biomarker for Pb.
