- Assessing the effectiveness of noncommunicable diseases control and prevention using data envelopment analysis: an international comparisonPublication . Nascimento, Ana Cristina Soares do; Amado, Carla; Santos, Sérgio Pereira dosNoncommunicable diseases (NCDs), with special relevance cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and respiratory diseases, are leading causes of death worldwide. For policymakers across countries, the prevention and control of these diseases is fundamental to ensure an effective management of healthcare systems. The main purpose of this dissertation is to explore the potential of using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to assess the effectiveness of healthcare systems in preventing and controlling NCDs. To this purpose, data from 27 OECD counties has been used. Our results point out a remarkable variation in NCDs prevention and control across countries, suggesting that the identification of best practices in this context may contribute to the development of more effective strategies to prevent and control NCDs among the population. These results also demonstrate the potential strategic role of DEA for an effective planning of the available resources.
