- Aims of education, disorder and lovePublication . Pereira, Rui Lopes PenhaAny account of education, it is believed, has to do with and aims at personal well-being. I approach this view on well-being not in a positive but in a negative way. I put forward some items that in certain circumstances can be taken by and called sources or forms of disorder. In the absence of such forms or sources of disorder, I assume that a certain order, prudential or moral, takes place and that constitutes the well-being of the person. The concept of ‘absence of disorder’ is introduced and argued as an educationally appropriate view of personal well-being which is the central educational aim. Therefore, ‘absence of disorder’ is positioned as the central aim of education. This concept is illuminated, for practical reasoning, by a list of seven possible forms of disorder: Comparison, Corruption, Dependency, Division, Fear, Self-disintegration and Violence.
- Educational love or ‘when is to give really to give?’Publication . Pereira, Rui Lopes PenhaIn arguing for philosophical attention to be paid to the model of love as an educational concept, I differentiate two common lines of inquiry. Firstly, I draw out the complex sets of emotions and dispositions that are found around certain practices and states of mind, that are frequently perceived as being love. Following this, I then distinguish other approaches as being ‘essentialist’ in the sense that they tend to follow the philosophical precept that the essence of something is what that thing is. Drawing on the insights of Simone Weil, Derrida and Emmanuel Levinas on the concept of ‘disinterest’, I argue that central to the concept of an educational love is the question of ‘When is to give really to give?’ Pursuing such a question, I argue, is the most beneficial route to disclosing the essence of love and maybe its educational centrality.
- Habitat quality of estuarine nursery grounds: Integrating non-biological indicators and multilevel biological responses in Solea senegalensisPublication . Fonseca, V. F.; Vasconcelos, R. P.; Tanner, S. E.; Franca, S.; Serafim, M.A.; Lopes, Belisandra; Company, Rui; Bebianno, Maria João; Costa, M. J.; Cabral, H. N.Estuaries are highly valuable ecosystems that provide various goods and services to society, such as food provision and supporting nursery habitats for various aquatic species. Estuarine habitat quality assessment is thus critical in managing both ecological and economic value. In this work, various biological and non-biological indicators of habitat quality in estuarine nursery areas were determined, encompassing local environmental conditions, chemical contamination, anthropogenic pressures, juvenile Solea senegalensis condition, biomarkers response to contamination and juvenile density. The various indicators provided an integrated view on habitat quality and their responses were broadly concordant. Nursery quality assessment based on anthropogenic pressure indicators and fish biomarker responses were very similar, signaling nursery areas with higher anthropogenic pressure in Tejo and Ria de Aveiro estuaries. Yet, favorable environmental conditions across all sites could have contributed to lessen the potential hazardous biological effects of exposure to anthropogenic stressors, resulting in soles' fairly good condition and generally high juvenile density. Nevertheless, a mismatch between high juvenile density and high estuarine contribution to adult coastal populations was observed in areas with higher anthropogenic pressures. Although a causal relationship cannot be established, the results emphasize the need to fully understand how the estuarine period spent in estuaries and local processes determine the quantity and quality of juveniles exported to marine adult populations, which is critical to achieve the full potential of the fish production service of estuaries and coastal stock replenishment. - Three in one-multiple faunal elements within an endangered european butterfly speciesPublication . Junker, Marius; Zimmermann, Marie; Ramos, Ana A.; Gros, Patrick; Konvicka, Martin; Neve, Gabriel; Rakosy, Laszio; Tammaru, Toomas; Castilho, Rita; Schmitt, ThomasIce ages within Europe forced many species to retreat to refugia, of which three major biogeographic basic types can be distinguished: "Mediterranean", "Continental" and "Alpine / Arctic" species. However, this classification often fails to explain the complex phylogeography of European species with a wide range of latitudinal and altitudinal distribution. Hence, we tested for the possibility that all three mentioned faunal elements are represented within one species. Our data was obtained by scoring 1,307 Euphydryas aurinia individuals (46 European locations) for 17 allozyme loci, and sequencing a subset of 492 individuals (21 sites) for a 626 base pairs COI fragment. Genetic diversity indices, F statistics, hierarchical analyses of molecular variance, individual-based clustering, and networks were used to explore the phylogeographic patterns. The COI fragment represented 18 haplotypes showing a strong geographic structure. All but one allozyme loci analysed were polymorphic with a mean F-ST of 0.20, supporting a pronounced among population structure. Interpretation of both genetic marker systems, using several analytical tools, calls for the recognition of twelve genetic groups. These analyses consistently distinguished different groups in Iberia (2), Italy, Provence, Alps (3), Slovenia, Carpathian Basin, the lowlands of West and Central Europe as well as Estonia, often with considerable additional substructures. The genetic data strongly support the hypothesis that E. aurinia survived the last glaciation in Mediterranean, extra-Mediterranean and perialpine refugia. It is thus a rare example of a model organism that combines attributes of faunal elements from all three of these sources. The observed differences between allozymes and mtDNA most likely result from recent introgression of mtDNA into nuclear allozyme groups. Our results indicate discrepancies with the morphologically-based subspecies models, underlining the need to revise the current taxonomy.
- Unipolar resistive switching in metal oxide/organic semiconductor non-volatile memories as a critical phenomenonPublication . Bory, Benjamin F.; Rocha, Paulo; Gomes, Henrique L.; de Leeuw, Dago M.; Meskers, Stefan C. J.Diodes incorporating a bilayer of an organic semiconductor and a wide bandgap metal oxide can show unipolar, non-volatile memory behavior after electroforming. The prolonged bias voltage stress induces defects in the metal oxide with an areal density exceeding 10(17) m(-2). We explain the electrical bistability by the coexistence of two thermodynamically stable phases at the interface between an organic semiconductor and metal oxide. One phase contains mainly ionized defects and has a low work function, while the other phase has mainly neutral defects and a high work function. In the diodes, domains of the phase with a low work function constitute current filaments. The phase composition and critical temperature are derived from a 2D Ising model as a function of chemical potential. The model predicts filamentary conduction exhibiting a negative differential resistance and nonvolatile memory behavior. The model is expected to be generally applicable to any bilayer system that shows unipolar resistive switching. (C) 2015 Author(s).
- Habitat suitability modelling of four terrestrial slug species in the Iberian Peninsula (Arionidae: Geomalacus species)Publication . Patrao, Claudia; Assis, J.; Rufino, MM; Silva, Goncalo; Jordaens, Kurt; Backeljau, Thierry; Castilho, RitaEcological niche modelling (ENM) determines habitat suitability of species by relating records of occurrence to environmental variables. Here, we investigated habitat suitability of four terrestrial slugs of the genus Geomalacus from the Iberian Peninsula using ENM. The potential distribution of these species was estimated using maximum entropy modelling. For this we used published presence records, together with observations from our fieldwork, and 10 layers of environmental variables in a crossvalidation design using ` minimum predicted area' as a measure of success. For each species, the models predicted distributions with high accuracy, while restricting predictions to minimum areas. Precipitation, and to a lesser extent temperature, were the most important variables to predict the distributions of the four species. We then compared the predicted distributions with the currently known distributions. For G. anguiformis and G. maculosus the predicted distributions included the known distributions, but also nearby mountain areas where these species have not previously been found. For G. malagensis and G. oliveirae the models predicted much wider distributions. Subsequent dedicated fieldwork could not confirm the presence of G. oliveirae in the newly predicted areas. Conversely, G. malagensis was found at five new and distant localities, including areas in Portugal where the species has not previously been recorded.
- Co-silencing of human Bub3 and dynein highlights an antagonistic relationship in regulating kinetochore-microtubule attachmentsPublication . Silva, Patricia M. A.; Tavares, Alvaro A.; Bousbaa, HassanWe previously reported that the spindle assembly checkpoint protein Bub3 is involved in regulating kinetochore-microtubule (KT-MT) attachments. Also, Bub3 was reported to interact with the microtubule motor protein dynein. Here we examined how this interaction contributes to KT-MT attachments. Depletion of Bub3 or dynein induced misaligned chromosomes, consistent with their role in KT-MT attachments. Unexpectedly, co-silencing of both proteins partially suppressed the misalignment phenotype and restored chromosome congression. Consistent with these observations, KT-MT attachments in co-depleted cells were stable, able to drive chromosome congression, and produce inter-and intra-kinetochore stretch, indicating they are functional. We suggest that a mutual antagonism exists between Bub3 and dynein to ensure optimal KT-MT attachments. (C) 2015 Federation of European Biochemical Societies. Published by Elsevier B.V.
