- Advancements in detection and mitigation strategies for Petroleum-Derived contaminants in aquatic environments: a comprehensive reviewPublication . Duarte, Hugo; Aliaño González, María José; Medronho, BrunoThe exponential increase in the production and transportation of petroleum-derived products observed in recent years has been driven by the escalating demand for energy, textiles, plastic-based materials, and other goods derived from petroleum. Consequently, there has been a corresponding rise in spills of these petroleum derivatives, particularly in water sources utilized for transportation or, occasionally, illegally utilized for tank cleaning or industrial equipment maintenance. Numerous researchers have proposed highly effective techniques for detecting these products, aiming to facilitate their cleanup or containment and thereby minimize environmental pollution. However, many of these techniques rely on the identification of individual compounds, which presents significant drawbacks, including complexity of handling, subjectivity, lengthy analysis times, infeasibility for in situ analysis, and high costs. In response, there has been a notable surge in the utilization of sensors or generalized profiling techniques serving as sensors to generate characteristic fingerprints of these products, thereby circumventing the aforementioned disadvantages. This review comprehensively examines the evolution of techniques employed for detecting petroleum-derived products in water samples, along with their associated advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, the review examines current perspectives on methods for the removal and/or containment of these products from water sources, to minimize their environmental impact and the associated health repercussions on living organisms and ecosystems.
- Navigating the new normal: the role of residents’ involvement and support in sustainable tourism recoveryPublication . Erul, Emrullah; Uslu, Abdullah; Woosnam, Kyle Maurice; Santos, José António C.; Aleshinloye, Kayode D.; Ribeiro, Manuel AlectorThis study seeks to provide a nuanced understanding of how residents' views on tourism impacts and their awareness of the pandemic's effects shape their attitudes and, consequently, influence their involvement and support for tourism by integrating emotional solidarity, the knowledge-attitude-practices theory, and social exchange theory. Furthermore, the study explores potential moderating factors such as gender and professional ties to tourism. Data were gathered from 545 residents of Manavgat, Turkey, following a cluster sampling scheme, confirming all ten hypotheses. The results reveal that residents' knowledge and perceived positive impacts of tourism significantly forecast attitudes toward tourism and tourists, which explains their involvement and support. The results also demonstrate that residents with strong ties to tourism were more positive and involved than those with limited links to tourism. The complementary merger of theoretical frameworks enriches our understanding of residents' support and involvement in tourism, shedding light on the intricacies of these relationships.
- The development and trial of beyond 2050 polylogues as a tool for future-thinking in business tourismPublication . J.; Sterchele, DavideIn this methodology research letter, we describe the development, piloting and large-scale trial of an experimental concurrent group discussion approach. Specifically, we detail how we used provocative 2050 scenarios to ‘open up’ future thinking, facilitate multiple polylogues and efficiently collect large sample qualitative data. The method was trialled with 120 business tourism professionals at the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) conference in Glasgow in 2023. We conclude by reflecting on our learning from the large-scale trial and consider how this method can be developed for other tourism research applications.
