- Horsing around: Animals, humans, sports, and platformsPublication . Fernandes, AdalbertoThe Tokyo 2020 Olympics Pentathlon incident, where German athlete Annika Schleu lost control of the horse Saint Boy, led to the termination of the show-jumping event and exposed the unstable relationships and definitions established between human and more-than-human actors. Analyzing comments on the three most-viewed YouTube videos on this case through Actor-Network Theory, we examine how responsibility is distributed between the two actors involved. Our findings indicate that riding is inherently relational and cannot be entirely dominated by a single agent. No ideal interaction point guarantees control, challenging human sovereignty over the more-thanhuman. Commentators place Schleu in an ambiguous position: she failed to control the more-thanhuman and, consequently, can no longer be treated humanely. This case reveals that distinctions between the human and the more-than-human are locally negotiated. Disruptions in these distinctions expose an enduring anthropocentric perspective, where failure to control the morethan-human disqualifies humans as fully human. The more-than-human thus emerges as a meta-normative guarantor, determining whether those who succeed or fail in control are granted human treatment.
- Agent-based simulations reveal the possibility of multiple rapid northern routes for the second Neanderthal dispersal from Western to Eastern EurasiaPublication . Coco, Emily; Iovita, Radu; Marco PeresaniGenetic and archaeological evidence imply a second major movement of Neanderthals from Western to Central and Eastern Eurasia sometime in the Late Pleistocene. The genetic data suggest a date of 120−80 ka for the dispersal and the archaeological record provides an earliest date of arrival in the Altai by ca. 60 ka. Because the number of archaeological sites linking the two regions is very small, the exact route taken and its timing have been the matter of considerable debate. In particular, climate change in this period modified landscapes considerably, changing the cost of moving in different directions. Here, we apply agent-based least-cost path simulations for the first time to Neanderthals, showing that they most likely took a northern route through the Urals and southern Siberia under all climate scenarios. Agents leaving either the southern or the northern Caucasus Mountains reach the Altai in less than 2000 years during two time windows when the climate was mild, in MIS 5e (the Last Interglacial) and in MIS 3. The latter coincides with the dated presence of Neanderthals at Chagyrskaya and Okladnikov Caves in the Altai. The results of this modeling approach demonstrate a remarkable east-west geographic connectivity of northern Eurasia via river corridors despite the presumed barriers of the Ural Mountains and major north-south flowing rivers. Our results highlight the unique strengths of agentbased simulations to reconstruct pathways for ancient migrations.
- Hosting eSports events: the quality-response-behavioural intentions relationship of eSports fansPublication . Cerqueira, Luís; Ribeiro, Tiago; Almeida, Victor Manoel Cunha deIntroduction: The current study aims to explore how the physical environment of eSports events can influence fan affective responses and their future behavioral intentions. Following the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) model, affective response (pleasure) is conceptualized as the organism (mediator) between the physical environment (stimulus) and behavioral intentions (response). Method: The dependent variables were revisit intention and word-of mouth, while demographic factors including age, education level, nationality, and event attendance to describe the sample and examine their potential influence. Data collection was carried out at a “Lisboa Games Week” event (n = 328) by using a self-administered questionnaire. A Confirmatory Factor Analysis analyzed the psychometric properties of the constructs and a subsequent Structural Equation Modelling examined the substantive hypotheses tested. Results: Results indicate that the physical environment quality positively influences the affective responses of fans, which motivates them to follow eSports events. Furthermore, fans affectively attached to an eSports event are more intent on revisiting it and making word-of-mouth recommendations about it. Discussion: A high standard service quality is a critical issue for event managers, marketeers, and publishers due to its impact on the behavioral and affective value creation towards the event.
- The effect of electronic marketing on the development of Iran's tourism industryPublication . Saremi, Fariba; Ramos, CéliaThis research investigates the impact of electronic marketing and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) on the development of Iran's tourism industry, with a specific emphasis on enhancing customer satisfaction and loyalty. Utilizing a quantitative methodology, data was collected from tourists through surveys and analyzed using multivariable regression techniques to examine the relationships between key variables. The findings validate that effective website promotion plays a critical role in improving both satisfaction and loyalty, with interactive and well-optimized websites creating a more engaging experience for tourists. Search engine optimization (SEO) was also found to positively influence loyalty by increasing visibility and trust, although it did not show a direct effect on satisfaction. Conversely, social media advertising showed no significant impact on either satisfaction or loyalty, suggesting a need for more tailored strategies in this area. The study highlights the importance of integrating CRM systems with electronic marketing efforts to provide personalized and meaningful interactions with tourists. CRM tools enable better understanding of customer preferences, which can be leveraged to enhance satisfaction and foster long-term loyalty. Additionally, the research underscores the potential of these validated strategies to improve Iran's competitiveness in the global tourism market, contributing to sustainable economic growth and diversification. However, the lack of impact from social media advertising and other unvalidated areas calls for further investigation and refinement of digital marketing approaches. The study concludes that focusing on validated tools like website optimization and CRM integration, while addressing gaps in ineffective strategies, can significantly boost Iran’s tourism potential and create a foundation for long-term industry growth.
