- Changes in bone mineral density in individuals with cerebral palsyPublication . Viegas, M.; Ribeiro, Luís Pedro; Pinheiro, João; Vicente, B.; do Espírito Santo Rodrigues, Sónia Isabel; Caldeira Lagem Abrantes, António FernandoAccording to Scheinberg, et al. (2015) citing Bianchi ML. (2013) Cerebral Palsy (CP) is one of the most prevalent diseases within those that affect bone mass, and is often related to other pathologies such as osteoporosis. According to António, D., H., et al, (2020) citing NIH, (2002); WHO, (2003) osteoporosis is a pathology that involves others and is defined by the deterioration of bone tissue. In this way, with the alterations caused in the bone tissue and with the reduced BMD values, the bones lose resistance to traumas, causing their fragility and, consequently, a greater probability of the occurrence of fractures. In this way, BMD measurement will help in the diagnosis of osteopenia/osteoporosis and in the prevention of future bone fractures. In addition to bone densitometry, there are other methods, less invasive and less expensive, that effectively analyze BMD. CP is characterized as a permanent, though not invariable, disturbance of movement and posture due to a non-progressive defect or lesion of the brain early in life. (Rosa, A.C.A. & Matos, M.R. (2017)) Depending on the area of the nervous system affected, the patient with CP presents neuromuscular alterations. Each change will compromise differently and to different degrees, affecting the functional performance of these patients.
- Comparing bone density and body mass in male adolescents: A contrast between soccer players and swimmersPublication . Pinheiro, João; Ribeiro, Luís Pedro; Silva, M.Physical activity seems to promote and benefit bone mass gains during growth for specific regions of the skeleton. Soccer has greater impact on specific regions of the pelvis and swimming on the upper limbs. Efforts should be made to encourage modification of all risk factors for osteoporosis early on life such as government policies to promote sports practice.
- Comparing total and regional bone density in male adolescents with different body massPublication . Pinheiro, João; Ribeiro, Luís Pedro; Silva, M.During childhood and adolescence, the increase in bone density results in specific maturational changes to the skeleton. This is a crucial factor for healthy development and maintenance during adult life, but also a critical determinant of osteoporosis later in life.Subjects who reach a higher Peak Bone Mass after adolescence have a protective advantage against the inexorable decline in Bone Mineral Density (BMD) with advancing age. Approximately 60 to 80% of the variance in peak bone mass depends on genetic factors; other determinants include modifiable factors, such as diet and physical exercise.Childhood obesity is a growing problem around the world. In 2019, around 29.6% and 12% of Portuguese children were overweight and obese, respectively.
- Evaluation of BMD and the influence of physical activity in lactose intolerant and non-intolerant youth – A study by DEXAPublication . Campos, J. M. L. D.; Pinheiro, João; Ribeiro, Luís Pedro; Caldeira Lagem Abrantes, António Fernando; do Espírito Santo Rodrigues, Sónia IsabelResearch questions and hypotheses and the organization of work.Lactose Intolerance (LI) occurs due to the inability to efficiently digest this sugar, resulting from a deficiency of the lactase enzyme present in the body. The deficiency or absence of this enzyme may result in the impossibility of ingesting lactose, consequently leading to the partial or total suspension of foods that contain this constituent (Oliveira J. A., 2020).
