  • Do the olympic values influence the social capital and the in-game commitment? a case study of esports players
Publication . Ribeiro, Tiago; López-Carril, Samuel; Calapez, André
This study aims to explore and describe the structural relationships among player perceptions of (a) the Olympic values, (b) the social capital formation, and (c) the game commitment. A field study was conducted in Portugal, and data were collected from esports players (n = 408) through an online questionnaire to establish cross-sectional associations. Structural equation models (SEM) examined the relationships between the constructs and tested the existence of mediation effects. The results indicated that the perception of Olympic values can positively influence the social capital formation and the psychological attachment to the game. In addition, the findings also highlighted the predictive power of the in-game social capital on the gaming commitment, suggesting its inclusion in future models. Social implications focus on cultivating the Olympic values through esports as a way to strengthen the player community and to enhance a lasting psychological attachment to the game.
  • Resident attitudes toward the Rio 2016 Olympic Games: A longitudinal study on social legacy and support behaviours
Publication . Ribeiro, Tiago; Yoda, Ryuta; Papadimitriou, Dimitra A.; Correia, Abel
The current study describes changes in Rio resident attitudes regarding perceived social legacy and examines its effect on support behaviours from pre-to post-Games stages. Four random samples of local residents from Rio de Janeiro were surveyed in 2015 (n = 532), 2016 (n = 519), 2017 (n = 465), and 2020 (n = 391). A MANOVA and a series of ANOVA tests were performed to analyse the differences in perceptions in different temporal stages followed by a structural equation analysis. Results showed that perceptions of social legacies and support for Rio 2016 has changed over time, increasing during the Games-time, but gradually going down after the event. Findings confirmed the positive and significant effect of the social legacy as a predictor of resident support for the Games in all four stages.

  • Towards hosting multi-country sport mega-events: the case of the bidding process of the 2030 FIFA Men’s World Cup
Publication . Almeida, Victor Victor Manoel Cunha; Anagnostopoulos, Christos; López-Carril, Samuel; Ribeiro, Tiago
Research QuestionThis study examines the antecedents and factors shaping resident support for the 2030 FIFA Men's World Cup bid. The analysis focuses on potential changes in a cross-cultural environment, specifically examining citizen support for a joint bid involving two culturally similar countries (Spain and Portugal) alongside a culturally dissimilar one (Ukraine).Research MethodsUsing a sample of 969 residents from the bid countries Spain and Portugal, a structural equation modelling and a multigroup analysis were used to examine differences between hypothesised paths across the two countries. Results and FindingsThe results indicate that Iberian residents have no strong sense of connection to support Ukraine in this bidding process. Understanding such support for an event bid involves more than merely participating in the bidding process; it is important to enhance resident trust levels, maximise social advantages, and minimise potential risks at every stage.ImplicationsIn an era when mega sporting events are characterised by a propensity towards establishing collaborative networks across multiple host countries to organise and facilitate large-scale sporting events, this study draws upon the theories of social exchange and community attachment to provide empirical insights into the factors that need to be improved as well as the relationships that need to be strengthened in order to gain support from co-bidding residents.
  • Social media as a driver of physical activity: a snapshot from sport sciences students
Publication . López-Carril, Samuel; Bae, Deukmook; Alguacil, Mario; Ribeiro, Tiago
Social media has become integral to daily life. During the COVID-19 pandemic, these digital tools enabled people to maintain physical activity at home despite restrictions, positively impacting public health. This study examines whether the trend of using social media to support physical activity has continued post-pandemic. A questionnaire was administered to 251 university sport sciences students to gauge their perceptions of social media's role in guiding and promoting physical activity. The findings indicate that participants engage with social media daily, viewing platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok as valuable for visualizing and promoting physical activity. However, they report a lack of professional training in social media use at the university level. These results carry practical implications for health policymakers, educational institutions, faculty, students, and sport industry professionals, highlighting the importance of targeted training in social media management and the development of relevant policies to harness the potential of social media in promoting physical activity.
  • Social barriers to sports practice by people with disabilities: an integrative and critical review in sports management
Publication . Viegas, Inês; Ribeiro, Tiago; Santos, Ana
This study’s purpose is to describe and critically review the literature on social barriers (SBs) faced by people with disabilities (PwDs) in sports activities to develop a comprehensive understanding of current and further research in the field. Methodology: The Theory-Context-Characteristics Methodology (TCCM) offers a comprehensive understanding of the key theories, the contexts in which SBs occur, the characteristics of PwDs, and the research methods utilized in the field. Findings: Our analysis identified 37 SBs in 44 articles with publication year, geographical dispersion, journal type, contextual setting, methodological approaches, and variables being explored. The findings support the notion that this research topic is scarce in sport management journals, poor in other regions than North America and Europe, and has used mostly qualitative methods. Originality: This study offers a novel contribution by blending theoretical concepts with practical strategies to prevent SBs in sports. By adapting the Social Ecological Model of Inclusive Sport framework and integrating the Social Model of Disability, the study identifies specific levels of action where sport managers can intervene to reduce these barriers.
  • Examining identity and perceived risk on technology acceptance and behavioural intentions of fans: an extended TAM perspective
Publication . Shuya, Zhao; Ribeiro, Tiago; Almeida, Victor
Purpose – The rise of digital innovations in the sports industry has led to the growing adoption of fan tokens, offering sports organisations new ways to engage with their fans. As these digital assets gain traction, understanding the factorsthat influence their acceptance becomesincreasingly critical. Thus, thisstudy usesthe Technology Acceptance Model to explore the roles of fan identity and the perceived risk in shaping fan token acceptance and aims to examine their effect on the behavioural intentions of football fans. Design/methodology/approach – Data were gathered from a sample of football fans (n 5 360) representing eight Brazilian clubs that issue official fan tokens through the Socios.com platform. Structural equation modelling was employed to test the hypothesized relationships within the proposed framework with bootstrapping techniques applied to assess the robustness of the estimates and examine the mediating effects of key variables on behavioural intentions. Findings – The results highlight the key role of TAM in predicting fan token adoption. Technological acceptance emerged as a strong predictor of both word-of-mouth communication and fan purchase intentions. Fan identity demonstrated a significant positive influence on fan token acceptance and purchase intention. Moreover, fan token acceptance was found to mediate the relationship between fan identity and behavioural intentions, indicating that fans with strong identification are more likely to adopt tokens from their sports clubs. Originality/value – This study advances theoretical understanding by incorporating fan identity, trust and perceived risk into the extended TAM framework. Our findings highlight the critical importance of trustbuilding strategies and effective risk mitigation in promoting fan adoption of technology and strengthening their behavioural intentions. The fan token industry should recognize the well-established and mediating role of technological acceptance while strengthening trust and leveraging fan identity to build deeper, value-driven connections.
