  • Residents' attitudes and the adoption of pro-tourism behaviours: The case of developing island countries
Publication . Ribeiro, Manuel Alector; Patrícia Valle, Patrícia Oom do Valle; Silva, joão; Woosnam, Kyle M.
This study considers both economic and non-economic factors to examine how residents perceive tourism and ultimately develop pro-tourism behaviour. The concepts used in model creation are Social Exchange Theory and the Theory of Reasoned Action. Based on data derived from 418 residents of the Cape Verde Islands (off the coast of western Africa) a structural equation model is used to test how perceived personal benefits and general economic conditions shape perceptions of tourism, and in turn how these perceptions determine pro-tourism behaviour. Additionally, the concept of welcoming behaviour is included in the model. It is found the perceived tourism impacts mediate between welcoming and pro-tourism behaviours. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. • Segmenting visitors based on willingness to pay for recreational benefits: The case of Leiria National Forest
Publication . Oliveira, Fernanda; Pintassilgo, Pedro; Valle, Patrícia do; Mendes, Isabel; Silva, joão
This article uses a criterion-based method to segment visitors in the context of a contingent valuation survey. The National Forest of Leiria, located in central Portugal, is used as case study. Respondents are assigned to segments through a chi-squared automatic interaction detector method according to their willingness to pay for recreational improvements. This method identifies the main socio-economic and behavioural variables that differentiate the segments. The results show that the segment with the largest willingness to pay is formed by visitors who contribute to environmental protection and rate their recreational experience in the forest as very good. Besides these environmentally friendly' visitors, two other segments show willingness to pay above average: graduates' and forest neighbours'. The study shows how the rich set of data provided by contingent valuation studies can be used to segment visitors, and therefore to support the planning and management of recreational facilities.
  • The role of superhost badge in Airbnb hosts’ continuance intention
Publication . Do, Thuc; Pereira, Luis; Silva, joão
Based on the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and the commitment-trust theory, this study examines the antecedents of Airbnb hosts' continuance intention by integrating TPB with trust towards Airbnb along with the moderating effect of the Superhost badge. A sample of 160 Vietnamese Airbnb hosts was collected through a web-based survey and data were analysed with PLS-SEM. Findings revealed that Airbnb hosts' attitude, perceived behavioural control and trust towards Airbnb significantly impact their intent to continue sharing on the platform. Furthermore, results also confirmed the existence of the moderating role of Airbnb hosts' status in their decision-making process. These findings subsequently lead to practical recommendations for the platform management in enhancing Airbnb hosts' continuance intention during the prevailing disaster.
  • The moderating role of tourism intensity on residents’ intentions towards pro-tourism behaviours
Publication . Lança, Milene; Silva, joão; Andraz, Jorge; Nunes, Rui; Pereira, Luis
This study analysed the complex dynamics of tourism based on perspectives and intentional behaviours of residents. The analysis focused on how residents perceive the effects of tourism, their satisfaction with it, their subjective well-being, and their inclinations towards pro-tourism behaviours. By merging social exchange theory and bottom-up spillover theory, it also investigates tourism intensity (TI) as a moderator, which has been understudied. A representative sample of 990 residents, in both high and low TI municipalities of the Algarve region, was surveyed. The model was estimated using PLS-SEM. The results revealed significant differences in residents' perceptions based on TI. Residents in high TI areas perceived stronger effects on satisfaction due to negative and positive impacts of tourism. However, TI did not affect the relationships between satisfaction with tourism, subjective well-being, and intentions for pro-tourism behaviours. The economic gains created by tourism may differ from the social and psychological factors shaping residents' well-being. These outcomes offer valuable insights for destination managers and politicians, aiding in the development of strategies to alleviate the adverse effects of tourism. Directing efforts towards improving residents' satisfaction with tourism, subjective well-being, and support for tourism can also contribute to securing long-term and sustainable benefits for host communities.
  • Planning forest recreation: environmental economic instruments and the public participation
    Publication . Oliveira, F.; Pintassilgo, P.; Mendes, I.; Silva, joão; Brebbia, C. A.; Pineda, F. D.
In Portugal there is a growing demand for natural areas that provide a wide range of outdoor recreation. This paper focuses on the particular case of the Mata Nacional de Leiria (Leiria National Forest). This is a pine tree forest with 11,000 hectares and eight centuries of history. It has always been a public forest with open access to everyone, a fact that contributes to different kinds of use and benefits (walking, cycling, picnics, collecting firewood, fruits and berries, and other recreation activities). The proximity to a major urban and industrial centre, on one hand, and to a very popular beach coast, on the other, makes this a resource that is widely used by both residents and visitors. In the future there is the possibility of implementing a set of actions to improve forest amenities and recreation, and later the emergence of environmental tourism activities and equipment. In this context, we want to know the economic valuation that actual users attach to these recreation improvements, but also realize their preferences and opinions regarding this project. For this purpose we designed, tested and applied a double bounded dichotomous choice contingent valuation questionnaire. The results presented in this paper focus on responses to attitudinal and follow-up questions. More than 70% of respondents have positively assessed the proposed improvements to the study area and about 40% enhanced their personal opinion on the type of interventions that they consider most appropriate. Answers focus the priority areas of intervention in the Mata Nacional de Leiria, the main concerns in its development, the type of actions that should (and should not) be implemented, respondents willingness to actively take part and, also, what the public authorities' role should be. At this stage, where Mata Nacional de Leiria is being considered in terms of future recreation and tourism offers, the results obtained provide important contributions and enhance the contingent valuation survey as a tool to support recreation planning, promoting public participation and the political decision-making process.
  • An assessment model of the Algarve as a sustainable tourism destination: a conceptual framework
Publication . Nobre Pereira, Luis; Muhs, Christina Susanne; Andraz, Jorge; Nunes, Rui Miguel da Cunha; Lança, Milene; Silva, joão
Sustainable tourism assessment models emphasize the need for holistic, integrated evaluations of tourism destinations, particularly in mature and mass tourism areas. While best practices can be shared, each destination requires a tailored approach, considering its unique features like infrastructure and natural assets. Research shows that sustainable tourism should involve continuous evaluation rather than a one-time assessment. This article develops a model for the ongoing review of sustainable tourism in the Algarve, a famous sun, sea, and sand destination in Portugal. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, the model was designed by analyzing existing frameworks and their relevant dimensions. A questionnaire was then administered to local stakeholders to validate and refine the selected indicators, which were ultimately used to create a framework for monitoring sustainable tourism in the region.
