Trata-se de uma distinção fundamental, não obstante os diversos pontos de contacto entre estas áreas, começando por aquele que é o mais óbvio: o ato de viajar. Na verdade, tal como ficará claro ao longo destas páginas, nos estudos em literatura e turismo abre-se espaço para a análise de um conjunto mais vasto de textos do que aquele frequentemente agregado sob a designação de literatura de viagens. Para além do mais, ao contrário da literatura de viagens, área científica já com algumas décadas de existência, os trabalhos centrados na relação entre literatura e turismo são recentes e, como tal, é ainda reduzido o número de estudos científicos sobre este tema.

Rodrigues Baleiro, Rita; Quinteiro, SílviaResearch on literature and tourism must depart from a distinction between this field of research and that on travel literature. Although they both focus on the act of travelling, there are fundamental differences between these two research areas. The most obvious difference is the fact that literature and tourism studies foster the analysis of a much wider set of texts than that aggregated under the classification of “travel literature”. Furthermore, unlike the travel literature research field, which has existed for a long time, literature and tourism research is recent and, as such, not many scientific studies have been conducted.

Baleiro, Rita; Baleiro, Rita; Arcos-Pumarola, JordiThis chapter examines foreign writers’ escape or holiday travel events to the Algarve (Portugal) between the 1950s and the 2010s to reflect on their experience of this destination. The authors’ biography and bibliography were analysed concerning connections to this southern European territory. The findings suggest that the presence of these writers creates literary places and adds literary meaning to the Algarvian landscape.
