Abstract(s)
Contingent Liabilities and Contingent Assets.
Corporate information disclosure constitutes a broad research topic investigated in the academic literature. One of the mandatory disclosures concerning the international accounting standards relates to the compliance of IAS 37, with the purpose of providing users with the information required to interpret the recognition of provisions and contingent liabilities in company accounting. This study investigates the influence of the 160 companies’ characteristics listed in Spain regarding the disclosure requirements requested by IAS 37 - Provisions, Contingent Liabilities and Contingent Assets. This study develops a disclosure index based on the reading of the companies’ accounts reports that considers the score attributed to 8 items related to disclosure requirements required by IAS 37. The regression analysis used in this work suggests that the size of the company, the weight of the shares held by the owners, the indebtedness and the amount of the provisions have a significantly positive relationship with the level of compliance with the disclosure requirements of IAS 37. On the other hand, there is evidence that firms operating in the real estate industry are less likely to disclose information related to provisions and contingent liabilities. This study contributes to a better understanding of the determinants of information disclosure related to provisions and contingent liabilities. The results are interesting for investors to understand the motivations of companies to disclose sensitive information to the market and to be more able to make informed investments decisions. Regulators can also benefit from the results of this study to help them to adjust the necessary regulation to reduce the information asymmetry between agents.
