Abstract(s)
The field of pharmacotherapy is constantly evolving and it is currently known that time may be a major influence in this area. This dissertation mainly addresses the importance of the schedule of administration of certain medications taking into account the biological rhythms of human (patho)physiology which is influenced by the cycles of light/darkness throughout the 24 hours. In this way, an extensive bibliographic research was carried out to approach and discuss several topics related to chronotherapy such as its scientific basis, first investigations, desynchronization of biological rhythms and their consequences on the development of diseases, the importance of drug administration schedules and also new developments in the field. Additionally, a small study was carried out, which consisted of a community pharmacy questionnaire to customers in order to understand their habits and knowledge in relation to their therapeutic regimen. With this work, it can be pointed out that the time of administration and biological rhythms play a very important role with regard to the effectiveness of the therapy and the development of some diseases due to the lack of synchronization of the biological clock. Therefore, it seems that deepening knowledge in this area is essential in order to enable the development of more appropriate and innovative pharmaceutical formulations, more rigorous dosages and technologies for predicting biological rhythms to prevent certain diseases.
