Abstract(s)
The tourism sector is growing, as well as the associated recreational activities like boat tours with visits to the caves. However, along with this growth, the associated environmental impacts are also increasing, making their mitigation a growing concern for those involved. The main goal of the present investigation is to analyse the consumer experience in the context of maritime-tourist tours, through a comparative analysis between the high and low seasons. It is intended to understand the profile of the visitor who seeks activities related to boat tours with caves visit and examine the impact of the experience within the activity offered by tour operators in the Algarve on the visitors’ pro-environmental attitudes, from a management perspective. In order to achieve the aforementioned objectives, a questionnaire was applied on boats run by companies located in Vilamoura and Albufeira. This instrument allowed the visitor’s profile to be defined at the socio-demographic, experiential, behavioural and attitudinal level, as well as the most valued attributes of the operator. A total of 638 questionnaires were obtained (420 in the high season and 218 in the low season). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modelling. The results suggest that there are some significant differences between the touristic seasons and that the experience in the context of boat trips with cave visit can be measured through the four dimensions – education, entertainment, aesthetics and escapism –, proposed by the experience economy literature. Although all dimensions of experience show at least one positive relationship with the dimension related to visitors’ pro-environmental attitudes, the aesthetics dimension has the highest number of positive relationships with pro-environmental attitudes. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed to assist destination decision-makers and operators in improving the visitor experience by emphasising greater environmental awareness.
