| dc.description.abstract | Ionizing Radiation is a powerful mutagen and carcinogen agent; however, it is used on the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases. Current radiation protection standards and recommendations are based on the premise that any radiation dose, no matter how small, may result in detrimental human health, by genetic damage and cancer. A radiometric study of a radiation diagnostic unit is extremely important, because is vital to ensure that exposed workers, as well as general public, are well protected from hazardous ionizing radiation effects. So, it is essential to verify the accuracy of the radiological unit protection barriers, as well to make sure that all recommendations and protection legislation are respected. This job is responsibility of Environment Health Division of the Portuguese healthcare sector. The present work aimed to study the protection conditions against ionizing radiation hazards in medical examinations in the Hospital do Litoral Alentejano Imagiology Unit, in Santiago do Cacém. It is an academic study considering that this hospital is working according to the current legislation, including radiological protection. Necessary data came from a radiometric study aiming towards the application of the most recent international rules and recommendations about shielding calculating methodology applied in rooms with X-rays sources, the NCRP publication 147. The security criteria of exposed workers and patients from the same unit were verified. We concluded that for the actual workload, the existing shielding in that radiation diagnostic unit is efficiently, as we initially expected. | |
