Abstract(s)
patrimonial.
The Sagres Promontory was awarded the European Heritage Label in 2015, not only for being a "key location of the Age of Discoveries that marked the expansion of European culture, science, exploration and commerce”, but also for the richness of the cultural landscape that is associated with it. This study seeks, on the one hand, to explore and problematize the various narratives associated with the European Heritage Label project and, on the other hand, to reflect upon the challenges and potentialities which the Sagres Promontory, as a European Heritage Label, holds, as a new heritage narrative. Based on post-colonial and critical heritage studies, and on three major thematic areas that are fundamental in this context - Heritage, Eurocentrism and Coloniality - the research explores the discursive practices associated with the "discoveries" and the Sagres Promontory, from the end of the nineteenth century until the present day, and focusing on two phenomena: the commemorative phenomenon and that associated with the debate around the public tenders for the construction of a monument to honour Infante D. Henrique (Prince Henry the Navigator), which took place in the 20th century. We have seen how the Sagres Promontory was exposed to a process of "patrimonial solidification", in a very intense way throughout the 20th century, with the permanent and repetitive recycling of discursive practices, which operate in a looping manner, sometimes integrating new elements, but in essence maintaining the same narrative. This scientific exploration is characterised by an approach that intends to coin an innovative and critical perspective and that also reinforces the pertinence of the application of a new hermeneutics - the epistemologies of the south - in the process of heritage construction.
