Abstract(s)
The imposition of austerity policies in Portugal and in many of European Union countries has been a consequence of the economic crisis and its responses. The main purpose of this qualitative study is an in-depth understanding of how the “austerity society” (Ferreira, 2011; Ferreira 2012a, 2012b), has impacted the life of elderly people, particularly within their family practices. Moreover, to understand to what extent such changes, meanings and their consequences have been modelled by their life course, gender, age and social class. The widespread of crisis effects and austerity measures has led us to consider that not only a set of changes have been expressed in everyday life and family practices of elderly people, but also in their health conditions, well-being and living standards. There is currently poor knowledge, regarding this linkage, from a sociological perspective. In order to capture a wide range of lived experiences in times of crisis and austerity measures, our study used a biographical/narrative approach. Twenty-eight interviews were conducted to elderly adults, of both sexes, age 69 to 92 years old, living in Faro municipality and belonging to different social classes and family structures. Despite the cross-sector nature of the changes within the family practices, our key findings revealed that these changes varied accordingly to the sociological profile of the elderly. The most severe changes were registered among elderly with a social disadvantaged profile. Furthermore, the research has also revealed that crisis and austerity negatively impact elderly people leading to significant changes on their family practices, health and wellbeing.
