Abstract(s)
This dissertation aims to contribute to the study of female entrepreneurship, with special emphasis on the Algarve region. Throughout the research, we sought to obtain data on the profile, motivations and difficulties experienced by female entrepreneurs who have created and have managed their businesses in the Algarve region, while also studying the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on their ventures. The research strategy followed was the Case Study, with the realization of semi-structured interviews to twenty-four women entrepreneurs who develop their activity in the Algarve. It was concluded that the presence of entrepreneurs in the family, the influence of networking, knowledge and professional experience were factors that contributed to the development of the entrepreneurs' businesses. Regarding the attributes of female entrepreneurs, we can highlight resilience, commitment, optimism, concern for others and society. The main constraints encountered were insecurity, lack of confidence, and difficulties in hiring personnel. Regarding the main motivations of female entrepreneurs, the need for independence and personal fulfillment, identification of business opportunities, and application of skills and accumulated experience in a sector of activity stand out, reflecting into a type of entrepreneurship by opportunity. The negative impact of the pandemic on the business development of the interviewees was globally observed - as a result of the impossibility of face-to-face sales and direct contact with customers - although mitigated by the use of digital tools. The existence of public policies, infrastructures and mechanisms to support entrepreneurship in the region was verified. However, it is denoted a general lack of knowledge about them, which may represent the existence of promotional/communicational barriers. In this context, it is recommended that the various actors involved in this entrepreneurial ecosystem allocate more resources to interact with women entrepreneurs, in order to convey to them the added value that their organizations can provide.
