Abstract(s)
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of sexual activation on the understanding and interpretation of situations of subtle sexual coercion. The proposed hypothesis was that sexual activation makes it difficult to read the clues regarding sexual consent and consequently impacts the other person's perspective-taking and interpretation of their desires, thus favoring the persistence of subtle coercive behaviors. The methodology was cross-sectional, with a quasi-experimental design. A total of 61 participants were assessed, divided into the Control Group (N = 30) and the Experimental Group (N = 31), aged between 18 and 45, portuguese speakers and in relationships. Participants with history of severe psychiatric or neurological illness were excluded. Data was collected by convenience sampling using the PsyToolkit platform. Sexual activation was manipulated through audio priming, and its effectiveness was evaluated through participants responses. A story of subtle sexual coercion was created to assess the participants' ability to interpret contextual clues after exposure to priming. The groups can be considered statistically equal regarding to the possible covariates under study (IRI, RMET and CTS). A factorial ANOVA found that there were no statistically significant differences between the groups in the history variables. The proposed hypothesis was therefore refuted, and it was not possible to state that sexual activation significantly affects perspectivetaking and the interpretation of contextual clues in situations of subtle sexual coercion. However, the Control Group showed higher averages in the three history-related variables. It is believed that methodological problems may have contributed to this result, such as the fact that the study was carried out online and the construction of the instruments lacked more elaborate analysis. It is recommended to repeat this study in the future in order to overcome the methodological obstacles and continue the investigation into the high prevalence of subtle sexual coercion.
