Abstract(s)
Equipment maintenance planning aims to maximise equipment uptime, reducing the need for emergency repairs and production costs, saving time and helping to improve production processes. This project analyses how the maintenance of medical equipment is managed at the Setúbal Hospital Centre, EPE (CHS). To this end, 28 semi-structured interviews were conducted with nurse managers and electromechanical engineers, as these professionals play a key role in equipment maintenance management. Through qualitative analysis of the interviewees' responses using NVivo software, it was possible to identify CHS's medical equipment maintenance procedures, learn about and analyse the existing medical equipment maintenance management programme and identify its problems. In addition, recommendations for improvement were put forward to optimise the medical equipment maintenance management programme at CHS. The results reveal that the main difficulties in managing the maintenance of medical equipment at CHS include the difficulty in prioritising the equipment to be repaired, the time needed for repairs, the emergence of anomalies in medical equipment, the lack of human resources to meet maintenance needs, the lack of investment in new medical equipment and budgetary difficulties. The interviewees suggest the following main recommendations to overcome these difficulties: the creation of an equipment pool, the formation of groups responsible for maintenance services to ensure that priorities are set, the implementation of an alert system within the computerised medical equipment maintenance management system, an increase in preventive maintenance, greater supervision of repair times when carried out by external contractors and investment in training for professionals.
