Abstract(s)
Nowadays, there is a significant increase regarding the use of technologies in today's society. Electronic devices are increasingly present in our daily lives, with the aim of facilitating access to information, uniting all populations, connecting people and promoting personal, strategic and economic development. However, with the progression of average life expectancy, there is an increase in the level of the elderly population in Portugal, with investigations in the area that reveal the importance of promoting active and capable aging. Given the increase in the number of seniors in our country (and not only), it is necessary to develop new tools and strategies aimed at promoting the quality of life and autonomy of the elderly. Therefore, the present study is part of the project "Field Study in Portugal and Spain" which aims to understand if the use of information and communication technology, in this case the SecurHome TV application, can contribute to improving the quality of life for older people. The period trial of the Secure Home TV app lasted one month, however the research period had the duration of 24 months. Both the trial and the research periods ocurred during the global pandemic of Covid-19. The sample consisted of 20 elderly people, residing in Algarve, with subscription to the MEO service in their homes. As data collection methodologies, a questionnaire of sociodemographic characterization was applied (with the inclusion of the Barthel index) and interviews were carried out with the participants during the period of use of the application. It was found that the use of this application contributed and facilitated various aspects of the elderly's daily life and provides an improvement in the quality of life, but there were software handicaps, internet connectivity problems and poor adaptation to felt needs by the elderly.
