Abstract(s)
This project aims to analyze the management of Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) in the Civil Construction sector and the economic impact that this management may have in this sector. This way, information from the case study company was provided based on certain information. The main objective of the case study was to analyze the production and management of CDW, in order to verify if the management of CDW can influence the costs associated with their production and forwarding at the construction sites. The company analyzed in this case study, has different construction sites in various regions of Portugal. This work aims to study the level of waste production, as well as the costs involved in the whole process, from 2016 to 2021. The results obtained from the analysis carried out, indicate that there are still several barriers (social, environmental and economic), as also referenced in the literature, which contribute to failures in the management of CDW. This case study suggests that a correct management of CDW, more specifically an improvement in the sorting of waste produced, may affect the associated costs leading to their reduction. For further improvements, there are following suggestion for future studies, such as: the elaboration of an analysis of a larger group of companies and a more in-depth characterization of the construction sites (ex.: implantation area; types of materials used). So it allows to anticipate the amount of CDW produced in future works, as well as the associated costs, supporting waste producers in making important decisions about CDW management.
