Abstract(s)
Solea senegalensis e Diplodus sargus.
O papel do poliqueta Hediste
The present study aimed to improve the knowledge on the macrobenthic communities within semi-intensive production fish farms, analysing their contribution for the management of those systems, both in terms of environmental quality and profit increase. Several experiments were undertaken in order to provide baseline knowledge for future research concerning the potential polyculture of Solea senegalensis and Diplodus sargus. Environmental quality of coastal areas is a growing concern and management measures must be taken in order to maintain their environmental sustainability. Another major goal was the use of macrobenthic communities in the environmental quality assessment and improvement of aquaculture facilities. Hediste diversicolor’s role in these areas was analysed thoroughly, as it has a commercial value, is a food resource for S. senegalensis and plays an important role in the dynamics of the benthic environment. According to the present study, the potential polyculture of S. senegalensis and D. sargus seems possible as competition for food resources is not expected.
