Abstract(s)
A insatisfação corporal
seguintes medidas: Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) (Cooper, Taylor, Cooper, &
corporal e as cognições perfecionistas.
Body image is partly evidence of an individual's lifestyle and is related to how they feel about their body. Body dissatisfaction is understood as a negative feeling that the individual has regarding their weight and body shape. It is a topic with special relevance in the study of risk factors of Eating Disorders. Among the extensive set of risk factors intrinsic to the individual, in this paper, we focus on three factors: body dissatisfaction, personality traits and perfectionism. This research aims to study the relationship between body (dis)satisfaction, personality traits and perfectionist cognitions in a sample of Portuguese young adults. The sample consists of 202 individuals aged between 18 and 30 years of both genders. The following measures were used: Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) (Cooper, Taylor, Cooper, & Fairburn, 1987) to assess body dissatisfaction; Perfectionistic Cognitions Inventory (PCI) (Flett, Hewitt, Blankstein, & Gray, 1998) to evaluate the presence of automatic thoughts of perfectionist character, and NEO-FFI 60 (McCrae & Oliver, 1992) to analyze which personality dimensions are related to the variables. The results achieved indicate a prevalence of 15.3% of body dissatisfaction in our sample, predominant in women. It was possible to verify a significant positive correlation between body dissatisfaction and the personality dimension of Neuroticism and a negative correlation with the dimension of Extroversion. A moderate and significant positive correlation between body dissatisfaction and perfectionist cognitions was also evidenced. The analysis of results leads us to conclude that body dissatisfaction is positively related to the personality trait Neuroticism and conversely, to the personality trait of Extroversion. A moderate positive relationship between body dissatisfaction and perfectionist cognitions was also evidenced.
