Abstract(s)
The analysis of first year college students’ mental health and academic
adjustment are the main objectives of the present study. More specifically, the aim is to
investigate if mental health and academic adjustment are related and, if they are
influenced by personality traits, wellness, resilience, social support and some
demographic variables, such as gender, age and degree.
The non probabilistic sample includes 595 students (56 % male), aged between
18 and 72 years old (M = 22.94; SD = 6.90). The variables were assessed using the
Mental Health Inventory – MHI-5 – (Ribeiro, 2001), Questionário de Vivências
Académicas – QVA-r – (Almeida, Ferreira & Soares, 1999), Wagnild and Young
Resilience Scale (1993), Inventário de Personalidade dos Cinco Factores – NEO-FFI-20
– (Bertoquini & Ribeiro, 2007), Escala de Satisfação com o Suporte Social – ESSS –
(Ribeiro, s.d.), Questionário de Atitudes e Comportamentos de Saúde – QACS –
(Ribeiro, 2004) and with a socio-demographic questionnaire made for this purpose.
