Abstract(s)
This report aims to describe the creative process of the photographic series "Projeto Vi·gí·li·a" (“Project Vigil”) as well as to develop some reflections pertinent to the methodology, technique and personal issues related to this research. The term Vigil here is understood as the characteristic mental state by being between consciousness and unconsciousness, or even in the borderline between sanity and delirium, reality and dream. In this bordering condition reason dissipates, memory is flawed, certainty is mere impression. At the same time, it is a state of mental struggle. Keeping awake requires immense effort to postpone the inevitable takeover of sleep. Representing a mental or emotional state visually is a constant challenge and task for artists. "Projeto Vi·gí·li·a" seeks to represent through photography this duality between states of consciousness. The transit between seeing and not seeing, the loss of the temporal notion, the distortion of space, distances and volume: this is the dominant tone of this photographic series. The conceptual experimentalism of work is latent, as well as that of a technical nature. To represent the state of vigil, so characteristic of uncertainty and lack of control, I choose to work with a format that reflects well these characteristics: instant photography. I will be limited to an automatic camera model, at the same time the very nature of instant photography eliminates the digital manipulation of the image. In addition, the images present a dreamlike character from optical devices: filters and prisms.
